Tsampanakis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Topic: <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>The importance of the Revolutionary Movement of Karpathos for the Liberation of our island and the Dodecanese in general, as well as the impact it had in Greek historical bibliography<\/strong><strong>\u201d<\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Eminence, Representative of His Eminence the Metropolitan of Karpathos and Kasos, Your Eminences, Members of Parliament, Mayor, Deputy Governor, Governor, General, President of the Community of Menetes, Presidents of the Communities, dear fellow educators, Representatives of the Military Authorities and the Security Forces, ladies and gentlemen, dear compatriots and friends, dear students, I was very pleased to learn that this year the Greek State established October 5<sup>th<\/sup> as an official holiday for our island. It was a necessary action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would like, first of all, to thank the Mayor of Karpathos, Mr. Michael Felouzis, and the President of the Community of Menetes, Mr. Nikos Kalis, for their decision to assign me the address of today&#8217;s Ceremonial Ceremony of the 81<sup>st<\/sup> Anniversary of the Revolutionary Liberation Movement of Karpathos of October 5, 1944 against the long-term Italian Occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In previous years, from this platform of the Central Church of Menetes, prominent and distinguished speakers, such as Academics, University Professors, fellow educators, other scientists and scholars, referred to this great historical event of October 5, 1944, which, as we all know, took place on the Holy Rock of Menetes, and subsequently had the universal participation and support of all the villages and compatriots of the Karpathians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The topic that I will develop in the few minutes I have at my disposal is: &#8220;The importance of this Revolutionary Movement for the Liberation of Karpathos and the Dodecanese in general, but also the impact it had in Greek historical bibliography.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As is self-evident, there will be no special reference to events and people of those days, since they have been exhaustively mentioned and written about in the past and I would need much more time to avoid doing injustice to anyone. I honor all the fighting villagers and compatriots of the Karpathians, and I turn my thoughts with emotion to their Sacred Memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the Revolutionary Movement of Karpathos primarily served was the fulfillment of the true popular will for national vindication and the Union of our island, as well as our neighboring Kasos, with Mother Greece. Until then, and except for the participation of Karpathos, and much more of Kasos, in the Revolutionary Struggle of the Greek Rebirth of 1821, the patriotic movements that took place on the island and its wider region were, for the most part, fragmentary or local in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, during the outbreak of the October 5, 1944 Movement, although there was no organized preparation prior to those events, the Karpathians, led by the residents of the villages of Menetes and Arkasa, &#8220;as if ready for a long time&#8221;, coordinated themselves so successfully that, despite any internal problems that arose during those historic days, they faced the developments as one body and soul, embracing wholeheartedly this great patriotic initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is easily understood by any careful analyst of the events. By methodically following the gradual accession of all the Karpathian and Kassian Communities to the Movement, one finds the unanimous expression of solidarity of the individual communities with the rebels and the generalized request to find additional weapons, so that they too can actively participate in the relevant events. wholeheartedly support this great patriotic initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was precisely this unanimity and determination of our people &#8220;not to miss this opportunity&#8221; that shook the surprised Italian fascists, who, faced with the obvious stakes of their lives and military honor, were forced to honorably lay down their arms on October 11, 1944, in Aperi, seven days after the start of the Revolutionary Liberation Movement of Karpathos!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is noteworthy, however, that, despite the enormous adversities that the Movement faced, the optimism of our rebellious compatriots led them, before the cycle of their armed operations had even closed, to set off on October 10, 1944, from Finiki, to cross the Mediterranean, in a small boat with multiple dangers, and to address the Greek Government in exile in Egypt, to request, on the one hand, the official and definitive integration of the islands of Karpathos and Kasos into mother Greece and, on the other hand, the immediate receipt of the two islands by the Allied military forces, in order to avoid any unpleasant developments from any ill-advised move by the Nazi forces that remained in the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while it took another three and a half years to achieve the first goal, until March 1948, it took only a few days to achieve the second goal, since, as it turned out, the correct reasoning of the Revolutionaries was fully adopted by the Allied Headquarters in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to emphasize that the Revolutionary Liberation Movement was in fact the historical beginning of the Liberation of the Dodecanese from the foreign yoke and its definitive Integration into the National Core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And indeed, on the morning of October 17, 1944, the Allied destroyers &#8220;Terpsichore&#8221; and &#8220;Cleveland&#8221; appeared in the bay of Vrontis and, amidst cheers from the Karpathian people present, landed a British military contingent on our island, which at the same time received the captured Italian military forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must be emphasized that the success of the Revolutionary Movement of our island was neither predetermined nor harmless! It was the result of the high patriotic spirit of the Revolutionaries, who believed that, above the passivity dictated by individualism, lay the pursuit of Freedom with every possible foreseeable or unforeseen price on the axis of collectivity. And so it happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One admires the insight and the steely will of unarmed, basically people, in their daring to achieve their eternal desire. And the services that those popular revolutionaries offered to their own land and to the rest of the Dodecanese were not small. After freeing their homeland from hunger, disease and the unjust persecutions of the conquerors, they embraced and hosted in Karpathos more than 4,000 persecuted Dodecanese, since the liberation of the rest of the Dodecanese was delayed by almost eight months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason, moreover, historical references to the Karpathian Revolutionary Movement of October 5, 1944 are numerous in publications, not only by distinguished Karpathians, but above all in books and articles by important Greek scientists.
