Karpathos<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The typhoons as are called in the Pacific, hurricanes in the Atlantic and cyclones in the Mediterranean are the meteorological phenomena that cause the greatest disasters on our planet. When they move and make landfall and before they weaken, they create floods and tornadoes and cause enormous destruction. The damage that they create in America alone every year amounts to billions of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Northern Hemisphere, hurricanes begin in late summer, intensify in autumn, and cease in winter. The sea, which warms up in summer, stores and retains much of its thermal energy, unlike the atmosphere, which cools much more quickly. Thus, when winter begins and the humidity of the atmosphere rises while its temperature drops, the sea begins to expel water vapor that creates hydroturbines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Mediterranean, cyclones begin about 50 miles east of the Dodecanese and reach as far as Gibraltar. In the eastern part of the Mediterranean, which is surrounded by the countries of the Middle East, cyclones do not form because their environment is warmer in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From time to time, in Karpathos we would see hydroturbines NE of Vrontis at five to ten miles from the port of Pigadia. The steam that rose from the sea would go to meet the clouds. Most of the time the hydroturbines would stay in the same position, but sometimes they would move left and right, back and forth. More rarely could you see a pair of hydroturbines that you thought were dancing in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Karpathos, the captains called them Troumbes and compared them to the pumps of their boats, which they used to draw the sea from the boat hold to keep it dry. Some of them would carry a black-handled knife and say some incomprehensible magic words \u201cto cut the troumbes\u201d, as they said. I remember, it was November 1949, when we were going by truck from Pigadia to the High School in Aperi, when suddenly a hydroturbines appeared a short distance from the NW tip of the islet Gaidaroniso, moving between Gaidaroniso and the Afotis islet.
