The fauna of Karpathos disappeared in a century<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within a century, the flora of Karpathos has changed radically, of the pine forests and low vegetation that covered 50% of the island, little is left, and of the hundreds of springs that \u201cKarpathos with the cold waters\u2026\u201d had, most have dried up, or their flow has significantly decreased. The same has happened to the fauna of Karpathos, because of the destruction of the flora and way of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More obvious is the disappearance of birds, such as the partridges that you could see singing from one end of Karpathos to Saria, and their hunting had become the main hobby of amateur hunters. Some of the Karpathians who went to America, returning to Karpathos after the war, brought with them a hunting rifle for themselves or for a close friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were so many hunters that they even created an organization. In Pigadia I remember the pharmacist Aristides Nikolaidis who we often saw returning from hunting with five or six partridges hanging from his hunting belt, and sometimes a hare. His son Nikos had the same hobby and would go all the way to Saria to hunt partridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even those who did not have hunting weapons used the so-called \u201cplakes\u201d to catch partridges. They took a \u201cplaka\u201d (a large flat stone) that they supported with small sticks, between which they put wheat seeds, and when a partridge went to eat them, it touched the sticks, the stone fell and hit it. A little further above the bridge of Ha, there is the place name \u201cPlakoi\u201d which took its name from the plates that were set up there to catch partridges. In addition to the partridges, there were also wild pigeons that we saw flying in \u201cKamarouka\u201d (extra-large cave), in Vronti where they had their nests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the hunters who hunted partridges, there were also children who hunted small birds with slingshots. When the Italians came to Karpathos, they planted the so-called \u201calmirodetra\u201d (salt trees) around the beaches of Pigadia, which grew quickly and fed small flies that preferred the small yellow birds. The Pigadiotan children called \u201cpalara\u201d (stupid bird) because you could get very close to them and hit them with the slingshot, while the Menediatian children called them \u201cxigopoulia\u201d because were very fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also the \u201ckefaloi\u201d (had big heads), they were a little bigger and difficult to hit with the slingshot because they flew high and sat on the tops of the almond trees. Even more difficult was the hunting of the sparrows that flew away as soon as you approached them within 20 meters. There were other small birds that I never saw. When every October we went to our field in Zetes to pick the olives, I saw their empty nests on the olive trees. Apparently, they were rather migratory birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also birds that were not hunted, such as seagulls. Some of them had their nests on the cliffs located in Saint Peter, above the current road that goes from Pigadia to the monastery of Larniotissa. You could see them flying out to sea and diving high from above to catch fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also black crows that were larger than partridges. When we lived in Aperi during the war, we would see them coming out of their nests high up on the Castle and flying at great heights. As they told us, they ate reptiles and carrion. The organists preferred the tail feathers of the black crows to play their lutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also migratory birds, some of which flew over Karpathos during their passage, while others stayed for a while. The swallows came in the spring and impressed us with their swift flight. When someone or something was agile, they would call them swallows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of particular interest were \u201cOplia\u201d that flew over Karpathos every October with their characteristic crackling, on their descent from Europe to Africa, heralding the arrival of winter. Around 50 \u201coplia\u201d flew in a group with a prescribed pattern. One \u201copli\u201d preceded and one meter above it, two more flew to the right and left of it, and four more flew one meter above them, in the same pattern. The same tactic continued with the rest, and you thought you were seeing the tip of a huge arrow moving in the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to ornithologists, the flapping of the first \u201copli\u201d pushes the air upwards and makes the flight of the two \u201coplia\u201d that fly over it more relaxing, and even easier for those that fly higher. Because the flight of the first \u201copli\u201d is the most tiring, at intervals the last of the formation takes its place, which is also the most relaxing. It is like the Karpathian dance, where the last in the dance is the next head dancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned above, \u201coplia\u201d flew over and did not stop in Karpathos. However, one morning when we woke up, in the early 1950s, we saw one of these \u201coplia\u201d formations sitting on the islet of Afoti. When some, out of curiosity, went from the port in a couple of rowboats to approach them, they flew away and went to Despotiko islet. (Watching them fly from one islet to another, we were able to determine that their length reached up to one meter). The next morning when we woke up, they were gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quails were the migratory birds that aroused the greatest interest to Karpathians and especially to hunters. They arrived in September, on their way from Europe to Africa, and stopped for about two weeks in Afiarti and when they saw a person they hid in the bushes. The hunter would walk among the bushes with his gun pointed at the ground. As soon as the hunter passed the bush where the quail was hiding, it would take off and fly backwards. The hunter immediately turns around and shoots it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to birds, the fauna of Karpathos also had other animals such as hares, which together with partridges were the most widespread animals in Karpathos. The hunter, in addition to his weapon, also needed a trained dog, the hares hid inside the bushes and only the dogs could find them and dig them out. The hunter had to be ready and prepared, the hare preferred the uphill where it is very fast, because its hind legs are longer than its front legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cZouria\u201d were other animals that was included in the fauna of Karpathos, which was also endemic to the forested area located NE of Aperi. In size and appearance, it resembled a small fox, and housewives were advised to keep their \u201ckoumos\u201d (chicken coops) closed because \u201czouria\u201d choked the hens and ate their eggs. \u201cZouria\u2019s skin was used for furs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The snakes that existed in Karpathos were not poisonous and small. Their length reached one meter, and their diameter was as wide as the finger of a hand. The Karpathians did not hunt them or avoid them, and as I had heard, in the \u201capokreatos\u201d (storage under the sleeping platform) of my great-grandmother\u2019s house there was a snake that had its nest, she considered it the lucky charm of the house, and its presence did not bother her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even crabs lived in the streams, where they had their nests under the rushes. The children who wanted to catch them went to the stream that came down from Voutsas to Pigadia and to the Afotis River. They would cut a rush and put it in the crab\u2019s nest, which would bite it with its claws and by pulling it slowly they would take the crab out of its nest and catch it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the south of Olympus, in the wider area of Agrelli, there were many scattered springs in the pine forests, where one could also encounter the endemic frog of Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
