When the immigrants, from villages and islands of Greece, came to America and created the local societies, they could not have imagined that more than a century later, their descendants would still exist in the third and fourth generations. The cultural and economic level of their descendants has risen, but the goals of the societies have not changed. They continue to maintain the bonds between them and the traditions of the village and island of their ancestors\u2019 birth.<\/p>\n\n\n

Thus, as has been established in recent years, the Pigadiotans society of Karpathos \u201cPoseidon\u201d visited, on Christmas Eve, the homes and businesses of our compatriots in New Jersey to sing the carols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vasilopita<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, January 4, more than two hundred of our compatriots, members and friends of the Society from New Jersey and other states gathered at Galloping Hills Caterers in Union NJ, to celebrate the cutting of the \u201cPoseidon\u201d Vasilopita and to exchange their wishes for the new year. Among those present were the President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Karpathos, Dimitris Konstantinidis, who came from Greece, and the President of the Karpathian Youth, Stephanie Nikitiadis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sumptuous dinner was offered, and Santa Claus (Michael Manousos) gave gifts to the children. In her greeting, the president of the Society, Irene Kourou, thanked those present for their presence and those who helped make the event a success, as well as the members and friends of the Society who welcomed them into their homes and businesses to sing the carols.
