Strategic Arc<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The geographical arc that begins at Cape Malea in the Peloponnese, passes through Kythera and Antikythera, crosses Crete and through Kasos, Karpathos and Rhodes end at the Asia Minor coast, was one of the most strategic areas of World War II. The holder of the arc controlled the sea accesses to the Aegean, the Dardanelles, the Black Sea, the southern coast of Russia and the oil fields of Romania. It also controlled the transport lines to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Suez Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italy, which controlled the eastern part of the strategic arc, appreciated and attached particular importance to the strategic value of Karpathos, which was 250 miles from North Africa, and of all the Dodecanese was the closest island to Suez Canal. By creating a military airport on Karpathos, the Italians could control the \u201cStrait of Kasos\u201d, the channel between Crete and Kasos, which is also the largest passage of the strategic arc. The Italian military plans included the construction of an airport at Afiartis, the protection of the port facilities at Pigadia and the creation of a naval base at Tristomo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the arming of Karpathos began, the Italians built some infrastructure projects necessary for the military exploitation of the island. They connected all the villages of southern Karpathos with a car road, which they extended to Afiartis when they started building the airport. They upgraded the port facilities in Pigadia, to accommodate large boats, and ships with a draft of up to 5 meters. The Italians connected Karpathos with Rhodes and the other Dodecanese islands with an underwater cable, which began in the middle of Vronti beach. On the sand near the road, they built a Cable Center. They covered its roof and walls with sand and planted bushes, making it invisible from the air. The building became known as \u201cthe Telegraph\u201d, from which the surrounding area took its name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Pigadia<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fortification of the port began from Acropolis, on which they placed eight 20 mm anti-aircraft guns and in a concrete base installed two more 37 mm. For the defense of the port, they installed a 75 mm cannon in a cave just below the entrance to the cemetery, and 100 meters west towards the port they built two fortifications equipped with machine guns and 37 mm cannons. And on the top of the hill of Saint Sunday they opened trenches and installed a 75 mm cannon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coastal defense of the port continued with fortifications at Pantelis cape where, between the Administration Building and the Post Office, they placed a 75 mm cannon and, on the seaside, within the cliffs that existed from Glyfa to the Administration Building, they placed barbed wire fences with a width of around ten meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The anti-aircraft defense continued with the fortifications in Saint Faneromeni. About ten meters from the eastern and northern sides of the church, they broke the stone and made a trench in the shape of \u201c\u0393\u201d. They covered it with boards, put soil on top, where they planted bushes and grass. The northern side of the trench ended in a 37 mm anti-aircraft gun next to a carob tree, which camouflaged it from the planes, but limited its range of fire. In Vroulidia, on the site of the current City Hall, they erected a 20 mm anti-aircraft gun and on the roofs of the Administration Building they placed machine guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fortification of the beach started from Scope and ended at Vronti with the main support being Lothiko. The Italians fortified Scope with trenches, machine guns and 45 mm mortars. Lothiko, located about a kilometer from the beach of Afoti, was fortified with trenches and underground galleries, machine guns, 45 and 60 mm mortars and two 37 mm cannons, and surrounded with barbed wire two meters high and ten meters wide. Lothikos\u2019 fortification complex was reinforced with machine guns on Afoti\u2019s beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next fortification was at \u201cthe Telegraph\u201d. Opposite the cable station and in the pine forest that existed, the Italians opened trenches and placed a 75 mm anti-aircraft gun that they used as ground gun to repel sea landing. The next fortification was on the Kefali hill which they fortified with trenches, machine guns and barbed wire, and built barracks for the garrison. Further, on the slope of Vronti, a little west of the chapel of Saint Nicholas, they opened trenches fortified with machine guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Airport<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most important military project of strategic importance was the airport at Afiarti. According to the Axis strategic plans, the Mediterranean was considered an Italian strategic area, and they envisaged the occupation of Crete with the help of the Germans, who recommended to Italians the creation of a military airport in Karpathos. Thus, in 1939, when the war began, the Italians, together with the car road to Afiartis, began the construction of the airport, using hundreds of local workers from all the villages of Karpathos with cheap wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took three years (1939-42) to complete the airport and when it was finished it was a huge flat plain without runways. Several planes could take off at the same time, starting against the wind to get more lift. The same applies to landing, they flew against the wind, which, when their wheels touched the ground, acted as a brake and stopped faster. The planes were parked in a circle and as far from the sea as possible, so as not to be bombed by Allied warships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fortifications for the protection of the airport and Afiarti in general started from Ardani to Castello, where they fortified the capes and beaches of Skrofa, Vounos, Christou Pigadi, Kato Agros and Punta with trenches and machine guns. From Castello, the coastal defense line continued west towards Arkasa, to Mindi, and to Saint Theodorus. A second defense line started from Scali, passed through Kipos, continued to Agriopilas and ended in Sitarena, which they fortified with mobile artillery, machine guns, mortars, trenches, barbed wire and anti-tank weapons that they installed in the Kipos area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, in Castello, the Italians installed a battery of four 75 mm anti-aircraft guns, and two to three kilometers north and northwest of the airport, two anti-aircraft batteries. Around the airport, the Italians installed 10 20 mm anti-aircraft guns. In Castello, they built galleries for ammunition and accommodation for the soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prophet Elias<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Menetes\u2019 Prophet Elias mountain, which dominates the southernmost part of Karpathos, the Italians installed a battery of four 75 mm cannons and two machine guns. To transport the cannons and other supplies, they built a makeshift road, dug trenches and galleries to store the ammunition. They also installed an observation post with wireless and had a telephone connection with Pigadia and with the underwater telegraph cable at \u201cthe Telegraph\u201d. The battery could prevent an Allied landing from Ardani to Arkasa, but due to its limited range, it could not protect the airport from enemy warships, which could bombard the airport from a distance without being in danger from the cannons of Prophet Elias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Arkasa the defensive line continued to Adia. The Italians fortified the capes of Finiki, Sikelaos and Adia with trenches and machine guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tristomo<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 1940, the Italians established a small naval base at Tristomo, where they chartered 4-5 MAS, which could reach speeds of over 30 miles per hour and were armed with torpedoes and machine guns. Two small cargo ships, Camolia and Orsini, armed with machine guns and a 37 mm cannon, were also chartered at Tristomo. One was a mobile workshop full of parts and tools, and the other made transfers from Rhodes and Leros. For the supply of food and other supplies from Pigadia, the Italians had requisitioned the caique of George K. Protopapas from Diafani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Orkili, at an altitude of 711 meters, the Italians installed an observation post with machine guns and a field radio, which communicated with Pigadia, Rhodes, Tilos, Leros and Kastelorizo, and had a telephone connection with Tristomo. The Italians installed outposts on the mountain of Harkis, in Achlai, in Pachi Vounos and in Kutsura, where there was also an aerophone. The Italians dug a large shallow pit in the shape of a concave mirror, which they lined with stones and cement, and in the center of the mirror they placed the aerophone. The mirror picked up the hum of the airplane from a great distance and concentrated it in its center, from where the aerophone retransmitted it amplified. In this way, the Italians learned in advance when Allied planes were approaching from the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armament<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The armament of the Italian military forces in Karpathos was significantly inferior to other great powers. Their guns, as mentioned in the bibliography, were mainly 75 mm with a maximum range of 12,500 meters, their shells weighed 6.5 kilograms, but after the war I saw 102 mm shells in Vroulidia and other places. They were of WWI technology, well built, but the aiming system was outdated and they were inaccurate. For anti-aircraft guns they used 37 and 20 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their mortars were of Italian manufacture but French technology, they were mainly 45 and 60 mm, but there were also a few 81 mm. The 45 mm shells weighed just 1.5 kilograms with a destructive radius of 10.5 meters, while the 81 mm, which weighed more, had a destructive radius of 15 meters. The Italian grenades were made of aluminum and had a limited destructive power and range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The machine guns were WWI technology; their barrel passed through a cylindrical water tank to keep it from heating up. The infantry\u2019s individual weapons were inferior to those of other developed countries, they used 5 bullet bursts, and after each shot it took five seconds to get ready for the next one. While the American (M-1) used 8 bullet bursts, were semi-automatic and after each shot they were ready again in one second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MAS that the Italians had at Tristomo were comparable to those of other naval forces, they developed high speed and, as they were armed with torpedoes, they could sink much larger ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italians did not use Afiarti airport as much as they should have. It was located near the sea and was attacked by Allied warships, which kept their distance from the coast. At the airport, the Italians established Squadrilia (squadron) 162a, made up of Fiat CR-42 aircraft, but, for safety, flew at a high altitude and missed. On the contrary, the Germans, who used the airport in the Battle of Crete, with their superior combat tactics and the modern aircraft they had, neutralized the Allied ships, causing them heavy losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manning<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italian garrison of Karpathos consisted of an infantry regiment commanded by Colonel Francesco Imbriani and Major Camarda as commanding officer of the Compagnia Commando (command company). The regiment had two battalions, Regina, commanded by Captain E. Giordano, and Siena, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel A. Agnesi. The mortars were commanded by Captain Armando Amenduni and the artillery battery at Prophet Elias by Major V. Comarini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accidents<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Germans left and the British arrived, there were thousands of munitions scattered around that the Karpathians were trying to disarm for dynamite and the capsules they used for fishing, resulting in deaths and mutilations. There were also victims among the children who \u201cplayed\u201d with the munitions. As soon as the Germans left, a Karpathian from Volada went to Pigadia and in his attempt to separate the projectile from its shell, the projectile hit the port steps and lost his life. A little girl from Arkasa who \u201cplayed\u201d with the ammunition lost her sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recycle<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the war, there was demand for metals, and the recycling of war material began. When Greece took over the administration of the Dodecanese, the collection of brass shells, which were abundant, began in Karpathos. Some tried to remove the shells from their projectiles at the risk of their lives. In one such attempt by a local man at Pantelis cape, several of us kids gathered and watched, but the police intervened and forced him to throw the shells and projectiles into the sea, which are still buried under the road that runs around Pantelis cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
