The following spoke about the honorees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Costas E. Skandalidis for Fotis Varelis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chrysoula Emm. Zoumba for Christodoulos Papachristodoulou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Souleiman Alagiali \u2013 Tsialik for Agapitos Tsopanakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The honorees, through Manolis Athanasiadis, had special ties to the Dodecanese Community of America, and I had the good fortune and joy of meeting them at the DHLA Symposia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charismatic Teacher Fotis Varelis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fotis Varelis was born in Salakos, Rhodes, in 1911. After completing the village school, he continued his studies at the Venetoklion High School of Rhodes and then attended the University of Athens, from which he received his diploma as professor of Philology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1940, we find him in Romania, a teacher at the Greek Schools of Constanta where he spent the years of WWII. After the end of the war, he crossed the Danube, crossed Bulgaria on foot and continued to Athens in 1946. We are in the years of the Greek civil war, and he went through many formalities until he reached Rhodes, where he taught for many years at Venetoklion and other high schools in the Dodecanese, and at the Pedagogical Academy of Rhodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was involved in literature and wrote several books, prose, poetry and plays. Among his works, the novel \u201cKitala\u201d was awarded by the Academy of Athens. Together with his books \u201cAlcyonides\u201d and \u201cThe Last Teaching\u201d constitute his trilogy. Particularly moving is his first book of poetry, \u201cSong of the Slave\u201d, on the theme of the unredeemed Dodecanese that was under Italian occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the national competition for the epigram in memory of May 8, 1945, the Fotis Varelis\u2019 epigram won and today it is engraved on the relief of a trireme on a rock in Symi, where the surrender of the Dodecanese from the Germans to the Allies was signed (in free translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTonight, Liberty spoke to me in secret.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Stop, Dodecanese, to worry.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Above all, Fotis Varelis was a Teacher, he became one with the students and the students became one with him. In America, there were his students that were involved in cultural events, and they proudly said that they were students of Fotis Varelis. So, when I met him in the office of the then deputy mayor, Kostas Skandalidis, after an hour of \u201cteaching\u201d, I said to him: \u201cNow I too will be able to say that I was a student of Fotis Varelis!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The academian Agapitos Tsopanakis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agapitos Tsopanakis was born in Salakos, Rhodes, in 1908. After completing his village school, he continued his studies at the Venetoklion High School of Rhodes and then at the School of Philosophy of Athens University, from which he received his diploma. He continued his studies at the University of Pisa, where he attended courses in linguistics, phonetics of ancient languages, Sanskrit, Italian language and literature, as well as classical philology, and in 1932 he was awarded a doctorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1933 he began teaching at the Venetoklion High School in Rhodes, but in 1936 he was arrested for his patriotic activities and deported to Italy. He returned to Greece and in 1938 he was appointed to a High School in Thessaloniki. In 1944 he was elected assistant professor of Linguistics at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Thessaloniki, in 1950 he became an associate professor, in 1955 he was elected a full professor, where he taught until 1973 and served as dean of the Faculty of Philosophy (1958-1959) and president (1964-1965) of the University of Thessaloniki. In the period 1978-1979 he taught at the University of Crete, contributing to its organization and staffing. In 1984 he was elected member of the Academy of Athens, of which he served as president in 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contribution of Agapitos Tsopanakis to science is significant, both as a linguist, the leading fruit of which is his \u201cModern Greek Grammar\u201d, and in the field of Classical Philology. His research work in the fields of Linguistics and Classical Philology refers to the history of the Greek language from antiquity to the present day. He has been particularly concerned with the idioms and dialects of the Greek language (Cyprus, Halki, Rhodes, Macedonia, Southern Italy, etc.), as well as with the language and vocabulary of important works and authors (Kazantzakis, Valaoritis, Korais). Among his best-known books are: \u201cIntroduction to Homer\u201d, \u201cModern Greek Grammar\u201d, \u201cProblems of the Demotic Greek language\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I happened to meet Agapitos Tsopanakis in person at the Symposia of the DHLA and at several meetings we had with people of letters in Rhodes. What impressed me was not only his wisdom, but also the simplicity of his character and the way in which he explained and simplified difficult problems. I consider it an honor to have had the opportunity to meet him and that he commented on my first book \u201cThe Battle of Tilos\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The historian of Rhodes Christodoulos Papachristodoulou<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christodoulos Papachristodoulou was born in Salakos, Rhodes, where he completed the first four grades of primary school and the rest in Kremasti. He continued at Venetoklion High School, from which he graduated with honors. He studied at the University of Athens and in 1928 received his degree in Philology. During the summer holidays, he attended postgraduate courses and in 1933 received the Laurea doctoral degree from the University of Pisa and in 1935 the dictatorial Diploma di Perfezionamanto in Filologia Classica from the University of Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;He served at Kremasti\u2019s Junior High School and then at the Venetoklion High School, until 1937 when it was closed by the Italian Governor De Vecchi. The years of self-exile of teachers followed. He went to Egypt, where he taught at the Greek High School in Mansura and as principal at the Greek High School in Port-Said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the liberation of the Dodecanese, he returned to Rhodes in 1945 and took over as principal of the Kazoulio Girls\u2019 High School and from 1956 until 1964, when he retired, he served as principal of the Venetoklion Boys\u2019 High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;In 1927 he began publishing articles and studies of literary, folklore, linguistic and historical content and in 1933 he published \u201cThe Rhodian Glossary\u201d, which received the 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;prize of the Language Society. Papachristodoulou continued his writing work with the publication of several books of historical and folklore content, including: \u201cHistory of Rhodes\u201d, \u201cContribution to the Toponymy of Rhodes\u201d, \u201cDictionary of Rhodian Idioms\u201d, and was one of the founding members of the DHLA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I met Christodoulos Papachristodoulou in person when, in 1953, the last two classes of the Karpathos High School went on an educational trip to Rhodes and Papachristodoulou guided us to the Archaeological Museum and the archaeological sites of the island.
