All of them came from Southern Italy and Sicily, who in Italy were considered lower-class citizens, and did not have the political means to stay in Italy and were sent to the Dodecanese, which was considered a warfront and dangerous area. Like the Karpathians, they also came from villages, and their life did not differ from which they found in Karpathos, and they lived with the tradition of their origin from \u201cMagna Grecia\u201d (Greater Greece).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the American universities where many foreign students attend, just like when I was a student, is New York University. Among other courses, English was taught for foreign-language students and, naturally, the newly arrived students hung out with their fellow students from the same country. When you went to the Loeb Student Center at lunchtime, you would see Greeks, Italians, Chinese, students from Latin America and other countries sitting at separate tables. There was also an Italian student who, instead of going to the table where the Italians were sitting, preferred the table with the Greeks. And when I asked her why she preferred Greek company over Italian, she answered me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-I am Siciliana not Italiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, in Karpathos, as was natural, friendly ties developed between the Italians and the local people. During the Italian occupation, 39 marriages took place between Italians and Karpathian women. And for better communication with the Italians, many Karpathians learned some Italian words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the arrival of 3,000 soldiers, soccer teams began to be formed among the Italian military units. Among them were some recognized soccer players, such as Leoni of the famous Roma team. He was particularly popular among the children who were excited by his soccer talent.
