Crete<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Manolis Cassotis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the \u201cBattle of Crete\u201d (20-31 May 1941) the war doctrine was established for the first time: \u201cWhen a military force has absolute dominance of the air in an area, then the opposing naval forces are unable to act without the necessary air cover\u201d. Indeed, during the Battle of Crete the German Air Force inflicted serious losses on the British ships because they did not have the necessary air support. The contribution of Karpathos airport, which the Germans used throughout the operations, was significant in the losses of the British navy, as well as in the outcome of the Battle of Crete. A Luftwaffe detachment, which went to Karpathos for on-site study, attached great importance to the control of the sea area between Karpathos and Crete and in particular the channel between Crete and Kasos, known as the Kasos Strait, which was under the complete control of Karpathos airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the area of \u200b\u200bCrete, the British had naval superiority, but their fleet had to pass through the straits of Antikythera and Kasos to reach the northern coast of the island, where the naval base of Souda was located, the airports of Maleme, Rethymno and Heraklion, as well as the other military fortifications. To neutralize the naval superiority of the British, the Germans advanced to the airports of Karpathos and Molai, 35 miles east of Sparta, 150 bombers and 90 fighter planes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 1941, before the Battle of Crete began, the Germans, with a bomber wing, carried out several raids against the Suez Canal and laid mines. The German bombers started from Romania with a refueling stop at Karpathos airport on the way in and out. German plans called for extensive bombing of the British military bases in Egypt, with bombers from Romania with a stop at Karpathos airport. However, Germany\u2019s attack on Russia thwarted this operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two weeks before May 20, there was a lot of traffic at Karpathos airport from German planes, carrying military supplies and Luftwaffe ground personnel. Fuel for the planes, bombs for the Stukas, shells for the Messerschmitts and other military supplies were transported by rail from Germany to Romania and from there by transport planes to Karpathos. Because until 27 May the most important battles were fought in Western Crete, the Stukas from Karpathos bombed the Allied positions in the Heraklion and Rethymno areas and provided air support to the Germans, who were trapped in these areas awaiting the German advance from Western Crete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British, appreciating the strategic value of the Karpathos airport and knowing the descent of the German planes, decided to react, and sent Force-C and Force-E against it. On May 20, Force-C under Rear Admiral King, consisting of the cruisers Naiad and Perth, the destroyers Kandahar, Nubian, Kingston and Juno, and Force-E under Captain Mack, consisting of the destroyers Jervis, Havoc, Nizam and Ilex, sailed towards Karpathos. When Force-C reached the Strait of Kasos, the Italians sent 6 MAS armed with torpedoes against it, but within a few minutes the English warships destroyed four MAS and the other two fled to Tristomo to save themselves. At nightfall, Force-E bombed the airfield, causing significant damage to aircrafts and facilities. That same night, British naval forces withdrew south of the Strait of Kasos for greater safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the morning of May 21, 80 miles south of the Strait of Kasos, Stukas from Karpathos and Italian bombers from Rhodes spotted Force-C, which now consisted of 4 cruisers and 4 destroyers under Rear Admiral King. The attack began at 9:50 am and continued without interruption until 1:50 pm. At around 1:00 pm three bombs from an Italian bomber piloted by Lt. Morassuti hit the destroyer Juno. The first two bombs hit the ship\u2019s engine room and the third hit the ammunition magazine. Juno sank within minutes, and of the 185 crew members, 6 officers and 91 sailors were killed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a368-Crete13-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87704\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">14 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c7\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b5\u03bc\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac \u03c0\u03bb\u03bf\u03af\u03b1 \u03b2\u03c5\u03b8\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd \u03ae \u03c4\u03ad\u03b8\u03b7\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd \u03b5\u03ba\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2 \u03bc\u03ac\u03c7\u03b7\u03c2 \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03b3\u03b5\u03c1\u03bc\u03b1\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac stuka \u03b1\u03c0\u03cc \u03c4\u03bf \u03b1\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03b4\u03c1\u03cc\u03bc\u03b9\u03bf \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u039a\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03bf\u03c5. 14 Allied warships were sunk or put out of action by German Stuka from Karpathos airport.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>The Battle Continues<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same night, to avoid the Stukas from Karpathos airport, Force-C passed through the Kasos Strait, but from the morning of the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;it was again under constant pressure from the Stukas from Karpathos. It sailed north of Heraklion in search of a German landing force of 4,000 men and at around 08:30 in the morning the British had their first contact with the landing craft. The cruiser Perth sank a large sailing ship full of German soldiers and the British destroyers sank smaller landing craft. Sailing northwards the British spotted the main German landing force retreating in the same direction accompanied by the Italian destroyer Sagittario. However, they were forced to break off the pursuit because they were under constant Stuka attacks from Karpathos and their anti-aircraft ammunition ran out. Because Rear Admiral King considered the passage of Kasos Strait too dangerous, he changed course to Antikythera\u2019s Strait. However, there too he suffered serious losses because he was attacked by Stukas from the Molai airfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 08:30 on the morning of 23 May, 24 Stukas, coming from Karpathos and Molai, attacked a squadron of the British fleet sailing south of Crete and sank the destroyers Kelly and Kashmir. The destroyer Kipling, although under attack by the Stukas, managed to approach the shipwrecked men and drop them life jackets. After superhuman efforts, the Kipling picked up 279 men and departed for Alexandria, but 50 miles from its destination ran out of fuel and was forced to refuel to continue its journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 24, to reinforce the garrison of Crete, the British sent an infantry battalion from Alexandria with the landing ship Clenroy, and two smaller landing ships accompanied by the destroyer Coventry. However, the attack by the Stukas from the Karpathos airport convinced Admiral Cunningham, after consultation with General Wavell, to recall the Clenroy. However, after a few hours, the British Admiralty in London ordered the Clenroy to go to Crete. Admiral Cunningham intervened again and canceled the order. Thus, Clenroy was saved from certain destruction, because defenseless it would have been attacked by the Stukas during the day. A second attempt by Clenroy, during the night, ended in failure and resulted in damage by fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a368-Crete2-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87706\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u039a\u03bb\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9\u03bf \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 Luftwaffe \u03c0\u03ae\u03b3\u03b5 \u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd \u039a\u03ac\u03c1\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03bf \u03b3\u03b9\u03b1 \u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03cc\u03c0\u03b9\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03ad\u03c4\u03b7 \u03c4\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b1\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03b4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bc\u03af\u03bf\u03c5. A Luftwaffe team went to Karpathos for an on-site study of the airport<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Operation M.A.Q.3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the Stuka action so far, the British had ascertained the strategic importance of the Karpathos airport and decided to neutralize it with the Operation M.A.Q.3 mission. At 12:00 noon on 25 May, Force-A set out from Alexandria, consisting of the aircraft carrier Formidable with four Albacores bombers and 12 Fulmars fighters, the cruisers Braham and Queen Elizabeth, and the destroyers Jervis, Janus, Kandahar, Nubian, Hasty, Hereward, Voyager and Vendetta. When Force-A reached 100 miles south-southwest of Karpathos, it was reinforced by the cruisers Ajax and Dido and the destroyers Napier, Lelvin and Jackal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At dawn, Formidable launched 4 Albacores and 4 Fulmars against Karpathos airfield. The Albacores destroyed two aircraft on the ground and damaged several others, and the Fulmars damaged several Stukas and Italian CR42s. However, 20 Stukas managed to take off and break through the protective cordon of 12 British fighters. Two Stuka bombs caused serious damage to the aircraft carrier and forced it to return to Alexandria for repairs, and the Stuka of the German pilot Major Enneccerus sank the destroyer Nubian. From the air battle that took place, the British shot down two Stukas and caused serious damage to two others that did not manage to return to the airfield and fell into the sea. The English, for their part, lost a Fulmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Withdrawal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 27 May the Allies decided to abandon Crete. The Allied forces in western Crete retreated to Sfakia and without major losses boarded British warships which sailed to Alexandria. Only the destroyer Nizam, while south of Crete, was hit by Stukas from the Karpathos airport and suffered damage. The withdrawal of the Allied forces in central Crete would take place from Heraklion, where they would board British warships which had to pass through the Kasos Strait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 28 May, Force B under Rear Admiral H. B. Rawlings, with the cruisers Dido, Orion and Ajax, and the destroyers Jackal, Hotspur, Decoy, Kimberley, Hereward and Imperial, set out from Alexandria with the intention of passing through the Kasos Strait during the night to pick up the Allied forces from Heraklion. On the return journey, the plan was for Force B to pass through the Kasos Strait before sunrise, with support from Allied air forces from Egypt. However, as Force B approached the Kasos Strait, it was attacked by Stukas, which caused 20 casualties and severe damage to Ajax, which was forced to return to Alexandria. As the rest of the squadron passed through the Kasos Strait, the Stukas severely damaged Imperial\u2019s steering gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Return<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At three in the morning of May 29, the British squadron received the Allied forces from the port of Heraklion. However, on its return the squadron would have to pass the Kasos Strait since it would have been dawn. It would have been forced to pass the strait without air cover from Egypt, which had been determined to be in the Kasos Strait at dawn. Before the British warships even reached the Kasos Strait, the Imperial, due to the failure of its steering mechanism, was left unsteered and almost collided with the cruisers Dido and Orion and the destroyer Kimberley. Admiral Rawlings ordered the Hotspur to pick up the soldiers and crew of the Imperial and sink it. Meanwhile, the rest of the squadron was advancing, so Hotspur had to pass the Kasos Strait alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hotspur, approaching the Kasos Strait with 900 men, sailed close to the eastern coast of Crete, to be further away from Karpathos airport. In case it sank, it would give the opportunity to as many shipwrecked men as possible to be saved by swimming to shore. The Hotspur, passing the Kasos Strait, saw with relief the rest of the English squadron waiting for it. However, the next six hours became an inferno of fire and iron. Wave after wave, the Stukas attacked the English fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early on, Hereward had lost speed and was abandoned to her fate, later sunk by Stukas off the coast of Crete. Her castaways were picked up and captured by light Italian ships, some of these men were brought to Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ruthless Attacks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, from six in the morning and before Force-B reached the Strait of Kasos, the Stukas continued their relentless attacks, which resulted in tragic losses for the British squadron. The Stukas turned their attention first to the cruisers Orion and Dido and then to the destroyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 06:45 a bomb fell near Decoy and damaged its engine, reducing the squadron\u2019s speed to 25 knots. At 07:00 another bomb fell near Orion, further reducing the squadron\u2019s speed to 21 knots. At 07:35, Stuka gunfire wounded Rear Admiral Rawlings and Orion\u2019s commander, Captain G. R. B. Black, who died of his wounds two hours later. At 08:15 a bomb fell on Dido\u2019s B-battery, causing extensive damage. At 09:15 a bomb fell on Orion\u2019s A-battery, causing extensive damage. At 10:45, eleven Stukas attacked Orion, one bomb penetrated the cruiser\u2019s deck, exploded in the mess hall and killed 260 soldiers and wounded another 280.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stuka attacks stopped for half an hour at around 13:00 and then continued until 3:00 in the afternoon 150 miles from Alexandria. Around 12:00 noon Force-B met the first British planes, two Fulmars, and a little later others followed which attacked the Stukas. In the dogfights the British planes shot down two Stukas, and another was shot down by naval anti-aircraft fire. The Germans shot down a British Hurricane. The damage to the Orion caused its fuel to mix with the sea and its speed dropped to 12 miles per hour, but it managed to reach Alexandria by sunset with its guns destroyed. Of the 4,000 men that Force-B received from Heraklion, around 1,000 were killed, wounded or captured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 21, Allied aircraft attacked Karpathos airfield, destroying two German aircraft on the ground and damaging two others. Also, on May 29, Allied aircraft attacked the airfield again, destroying two German Me 109 fighters on the ground. Finally, on 30 May, other Allied aircraft attacked the airfield, destroying an Italian bomber on the ground, but Italian anti-aircraft fire shot down an Allied Wellington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the following days, German planes from Karpathos dominated the entire area from the southeastern coast of Crete to North Africa. On May 31, Stukas caused serious damage to the engine room of cruiser Perth and destroyers Kelvin and Napier. Finally, on June 1<sup>st<\/sup>, two German Stukas from Karpathos encountered the cruisers Calcutta and Coventry 150 miles west of Alexandria and 50 miles from the African coast. The first Stuka attacked Coventry without effect, but two bombs from the second Stuka hit Calcutta, which sank within minutes.
