Apart from the Dodecanese, several members of the D.H.L.A. come from other regions of Greece and from other countries of the world, such as Gordana Blagojevic from Serbia. They are people of letters who deal with issues related to the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than six decades later, we find the D.H.L.A. established among the notable Greek intellectual organizations, having published 31 volumes of the scientific periodical \u201cDodecanese Chronicles\u201d, 43 independent scientific and literary publications, as well as 6 issues of the literature and art magazine \u201cRhodian Letters\u201d, a total of 80 books. The publication of so many books is made possible by the philanthropic contribution of Manolis Makris, president of the D.H.L.A., in the typesetting of the books, as well as the contribution of Nikos Konstantinidis, treasurer of the D.H.L.A., in finding the most suitable printing houses, as well as the donations of organizations and individuals who pay the printing costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also in 1978, starting from Rhodes, the D.H.L.A. established the biennial organization of Cultural Symposia on one of the islands of the Dodecanese. The theme concerns the Dodecanese in general, but also one of the islands of the Dodecanese in particular, and especially the island hosting the Symposium. In parallel with the publication of the Dodecanese Chronicles which includes all the announcements, a separate edition is published of the announcements referring to the island hosting the Symposium. Then the series resumed from each island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highest recognition of the work of the D.H.L.A. is its award in 1985 by the Academy of Athens for its contribution to the intellectual and cultural development of the Dodecanese, as stated in the reasoning of the Academy\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special ties, connect the Dodecanese community of America with the D.H.L.A. The late Manolis Athanasiadis was one of the first members and collaborators of the D.H.L.A. The ties continued and strengthened with the translation into English and the financing of certain D.H.L.A. publications that have enriched more than 50 libraries in America. The Dodecanese of America support the decision of the D.H.L.A. to write the History of each island of the Dodecanese in Greek and English. They undertake the translation and, through their associations, help financially with the printing. Thus, the new generation of expatriate Dodecanese, as well as the wider scientific public, is given the opportunity to learn about the history of even the smallest islands of the Dodecanese.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/a369-Leros7-Small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/a369-Leros7-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88939\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0399\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03af \u03b1\u03be\u03b9\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03af \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf \u03bb\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03bd\u03b9 \u03c4\u03b7\u03c2 \u039b\u03ad\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5. In addition to their knowledge, I was particularly impressed by the simplicity of their character. I remember the president of the Academy of Athens, Agapitos Tsopanakis, who when you talked to him, considered you his equal. \u201cTeacher\u201d Fotis Varelis, who treated you as if you were his classmate, remains unforgettable. There were also close ties and cooperation with the other members of the D.H.L.A. They could lend you their books that were about to be printed so that you could get information, they even offered you documents before they used them themselves. There were also co-publications between the members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who participate in their symposia are given the opportunity to get to know the most remote islands up close, to get to know their people, their customs and their hospitality, those who guard Thermopylae. I remember when we went to Kastelorizo, we visited the island of the \u201cLady of Ro\u201d. We laid a wreath at the tomb of Despina Achladiotou, and the female members of the D.H.L.A. cooked and served a meal to the soldiers who were serving on the island. On the way back from Ro to Kastelorizo, passing by a five-square-meter rocky islet, one of the sailors told us that half of it belongs to Greece and the other half to Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s Symposium was held in Leros between June 25-27. With the participation of 100 researchers of scientific prestige, and with an interdisciplinary variety and originality of 92 announcements. Of these, 42 referred generally to the Dodecanese, 27 to Leros and 23 to other islands of the Dodecanese. Among them, five announcements refer to the Dodecanese community of America and one to France. Among others, the symposium was honored with their presence by His Eminence Metropolitan of Leros, Kalymnos and Astypalaia Paisios, the Mayor of Leros Timothy Kottakis and people of letters and arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the WWII, due to the naval war facilities that existed in the natural and spacious harbor at Lakki, Leros was called the \u201cMalta of the Eastern Mediterranean\u201d. The \u201cBattle of Leros\u201d is considered one of the most important military events of the Second World War in the Mediterranean, which is extensively referred to in international bibliography. The internationally renowned magazine After the Battle dedicated an entire issue entitled \u201cThe Battle of Leros\u201d.
