class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dear Maria, I read your article \u201cStories of Lastos\u201d and it took me back a century.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a time when Lastos, along with Possi, Afiartis, Lefkos, Avlona, \u200b\u200bSaria and the other agricultural areas of Karpathos, sustained and gave life to the island. At a time when people spent most of their time outside the village, in the suburbs, in their stables, where they had their fields and animals, and if they were shepherds in their shepherd stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is difficult for today\u2019s visitor to imagine the people and the living conditions that our grandparents lived through, which you describe with such vividness. We learned about these conditions from the stories of our elders, and we keep them as a talisman. They are our roots, which we remember and which keep us committed to our values \u200b\u200bthat we do not negotiate. Now, in turn, we are trying to convey them to those who will follow us. But will they have the patience to listen to us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, these people were not perfect, they had their flaws too, but they didn\u2019t run to the judges to resolve their differences, after all, who trusts them today, a \u201cmantinada\u201d (verse) was enough to resolve their differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those people knew their place, not only among their fellow humans, but also with nature, the land and their animals, they knew how to take care of them and treat them, after all a short wall separated them. The fields, the springs and the animals all lived around in a circle, and in the middle the man to rule over them, but also to take care of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I read your article for the second time, I stopped, every now and then, because forgotten images were awakening in me. I imagined Metropolitan Germanos in his robes riding the mule and Peltnichronis pulling it by the halter to take him to Lastos to perform the liturgy at \u201cAxestratikos\u201d (Archangel Michael). Often the mule would jump up and down and the Metropolitan\u2019s robes would flutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hatzalexis, my mother\u2019s uncle, also had a \u201cstubborn\u201d mule, they called it Lenio, but we don\u2019t imagine a Despot or even a priest ever riding it, because it was \u201ctsiniariko\u201d (unruly). I never approached it from the front or from behind, but from the sides, apart from kicking, it also bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The obsession of the \u201cstubborn\u201d mule to enter and graze in foreign prefectures reminded me of an Olympian cow. Once, a man from Arkasa bought a cow from Olympus and at night left it unattended in his field. The next morning, he found the wheat of the neighboring field eaten, but the cow was in his field. This lasted for several days, neither he nor the owner of the neighboring field could solve the mystery because a high wall separated their fields.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u039a\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd\u03bf\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They decided to set up a watch at night to catch the thief. The fields were coastal and open to the sea. At night, the cow would swim and from the seaside would enter the neighboring field and, in the morning, before dawn, would return. However, neither the Olympian cow nor the \u201cstubborn\u201d mule were lucky enough to be immortalized with a mantinada (verse).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was not afraid of the \u201cAnaraes\u201d (exotix and fascinating, tall and slender women, white as milk, with large and red eyes), because I was \u201cSabbatogenimenos\u201d (born on Saturday). In Zetes, two kilometers from Pigadia, we had a field, on the slope of a hill. Every now and then we would go with the neighborhood children to collect wood for the fire. Although I was the youngest in the group, they would not start without me, not for the wood I would collect but as security from the \u201cAnaraes\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On one of these excursions, we arrived at noon in the field, at the time when the \u201cAnaraes\u201d came out. Someone said something about it and immediately another child saw three \u201cAnaraes\u201d dressed in white and with hats like sieves on their heads coming down from the opposite slope. In a while, one by one, the other children also saw the \u201cAnaraes\u201d, except for me, the Saturday-born, and for greater safety, they gathered around me. We returned without any wood. The neighborhood showed more interest in the \u201cAnaraes\u201d we encountered than in the wood we did not bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our route passed through a dry riverbed, and on one of these outings I found a reddish stone and showed it to the group, who immediately decided that it was made of gold. Because the stone weighed up to a kilogram, we left it on the side of the road to pick it up on the way back, but we never found it again. Each time the story repeated itself, the stone became more red and more glittering. Years later, when I was telling the story to an aunt of mine, she said to me: \u201cIf you had taken the stone with you and not left it, now we would be rich.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the mule, every good farmer had to have two \u201ctserassata\u201d (horned oxen) to cultivate his fields. During the sowing season, the children would sit on the wall of the field watching the oxen pulling the plow, and the farmer on the plow, pressing with all his weight, for the plowshare to go deeper into the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who didn\u2019t have two oxen tried to pair an ox and a mule. But it was difficult to coordinate them because the ox was stronger but shorter, while the mule was taller and thinner. There were also the poor people who didn\u2019t even have a mule and tried to pair up an ox with a donkey, which was going like a lame man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end of the horned oxen was inglorious and tragic. When they grew old and were no longer fit to plow the fields or thresh the ears of wheat, they did not retire. They were sacrificed at the wedding of some wealthy man; how else, could they feed the relatives of the bride and groom and the whole village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The neighborhood children would gather to watch the slaughter of the horned oxen. In the past, about a dozen men would tie the ox\u2019s legs to throw it down and then slaughter it, while it kicked with all its remaining strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Asia Minor disaster, a short butcher, John the Smyrnian, who came as a refugee from Smyrna, taught the Karpathians to slaughter oxen. At the root of an olive tree or other old tree, he would put a little rye seeds in a bucket and as the ox ate, they would tie its head to the tree trunk with its horns. As the ox was immobilized, with a small knife, he would cut the nerves connected with the brain, between two vertebrae in the neck.
