He was from the generation that experienced one of the worst times the world has ever known. He experienced the closing of the Greek schools by the Italians, in their attempt to dehellenicize the Dodecanese. He experienced firsthand the devastation caused by the Second World&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anamniseis.net\/aftoi-pou-febgoun-giorgos-manolakis\/#\">&nbsp;War<\/a>, he saw people lose their lives, among them children who were their friends and the day before were playing together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0395\u03b3\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03b5\u03af\u03c4\u03b5\u03a3\u03b5 \u03a3\u03b5\u03bc\u03b9\u03bd\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03b1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he was also from the generation that saw freedom embrace Karpathos and integrate with Mother Greece. He was also from the same generation that, after so many struggles and hardships, faced the future with optimism and with much effort and hard work, achieved greatness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">George, the third son of Alexis Manolakis who came from a merchant family of Kasos and of Eudoxia Kourtis, a well-known family from Menetes, he was born in Karpathos in 1931. His father was one of the merchants of Spezza who, during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anamniseis.net\/aftoi-pou-febgoun-giorgos-manolakis\/#\">&nbsp;war<\/a>&nbsp;years, took care of importing food to feed the Karpathians. In 1943, when the Germans occupied Karpathos, he and his entire family moved to Aperi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Germans allowed the opening of Greek schools, George attended the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anamniseis.net\/aftoi-pou-febgoun-giorgos-manolakis\/#\">&nbsp;primary school<\/a>&nbsp;of Aperi. In the first grade they put those who had started from the alphabet, in the next those who knew how to read, in the next those who knew a little more and in the last, with the school director Christoforos Sakellaridis as their teacher, those who had attended the \u201cSecret School\u201d. George attended this grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following year, after the arrival of the British, he did not attend the primary school of Pigadia like the other Pigadiotan children, but continued at Aperi\u2019s middle school, again headed by Christoforos Sakellaridis. Apparently, George was the most diligent student. At the school festival at the end of the year, British officials were present, among them the military commander Captain Pyke, who awarded George the first prize, five English paper pounds. (At that time, one paper British pound was equivalent to four dollars, and 10 dollars to one gold pound. That is, five English paper pounds of the time are equivalent today to two British Gold Sovereign).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to his academic achievements, George also had artistic talents and took the lead in school celebrations and events, even during the Italian occupation. I remember Christoforos Sakellaridis saying many times that he had the qualifications to become an actor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After completing his studies at Aperi\u2019s middle school, he continued at the Venetokleio High School in Rhodes, from which he graduated with honors. He then studied at the Athens University of Commerce and later went to America, where he continued his postgraduate studies. Later, returning to Greece, he served in Simitis Government, participating in Greece\u2019s accession to the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">George also distinguished himself for his athletic achievements in soccer, after all, there was a family tradition in the Manolaki family. His eldest brother, Elias, was a member of the Pigadiotan team that competed against the Italians and, after the war, of the \u201cPoseidon\u201d team that won the cup that was organized by the journalist Charalambos Kassios. This tradition was continued by George and his brothers Theodosis and Manolis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u03a0\u03c1\u03bf\u03bc\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03cd\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03a3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c9\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc \u0395\u03be\u03bf\u03c0\u03bb\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young George\u2019s interest and mastery in soccer was noticed by Barbieri, the center-for of the military soccer team \u2018Fanteria\u2019. He undertook to train him and, among other things, taught him how to \u201cdribble\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When, after the arrival of the Germans, the people of Pigadia were forced to abandon Pigadia, most of them settled in Aperi. Thus, when the Germans allowed the opening of Greek schools, there were quite a few children from Pigadia who attended Aperi\u2019s primary school, and George undertook to organize a children\u2019s soccer team from Pigadia, which competed in the schoolyard, against the corresponding team from Aperi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The daily result of the match was 4-0 in favor of the Pigadiotan team. In one of the next matches, George tells Dinos Hiotakis, who was playing goalkeeper at the time, to let the ball pass. The Aperitan\u2019s team scored the first goal and then Pigadiotan\u2019s equalized. This continued, with a final score of 4-3 in favor of the Aperitan\u2019s team. The Aperitan children, in their excitement, celebrated by throwing their school bags in the air. But from the next day, the result returned to 4-0 in favor of the Pigadiotan team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 1948, \u201cPoseidon\u2019s\u201d veteran soccer players began to retire and replaced by younger players, including George. Soon, Lazaros Kosmas, who was \u201cPoseidon\u2019s\u201d president and coach, recognized George\u2019s abilities, and in 1954 appointed him captain of the team. It was the team nicknamed \u2018Trident\u2019 that won the cup, although some teams from other villages had been reinforced with recognized players from Rhodes and Piraeus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">George Manolakis, while in America, was also involved in societies activities.
