In the United States, PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) airs the program \u201cFinding Your Roots\u201d, which traces the family origins of well-known individuals using family traditions, documents, and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). I am using the same method to trace my own ancestral roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to family tradition, when the Revolution of 1821 broke out in Crete, Nikolas Alexakis gathered his men and took to the mountains to fight the Turks. He inflicted heavy losses on the enemy but suffered significant casualties himself. In one battle, he was surrounded by the Turco-Albanian forces of Muhammad Ali of Egypt; they killed him and his sons who were fighting alongside him and decimated his band of warriors. Only his second-in-command, his brother Anastaros, managed to escape, along with two or three other men; after many ordeals, they succeeded in reaching Karpathos aboard a Kasian sailing ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexis, Alexakis\u2019 ten-year-old son, escaped the annihilation of his family; due to his young age, he had not accompanied his father to the mountains. His relatives hid and protected him, and in 1827, when a suitable opportunity arose, they spirited him away to Karpathos to stay with his uncle, Anastaros. Later, with the help of his relatives, he sold what remained of his father\u2019s estate; using the proceeds, he purchased extensive landholdings on Karpathos and became a major landowner.<\/p>\n\n\n

In 1840, Alexis Alexakis married Zoe, John Piliatis\u2019 daughter, his surname indicates that he came from the village of Pyles. However, DNA evidence suggests that one of his ancestors moved from Pyles to Othos, where he acquired the surname Piliatis. According to DNA analysis, the majority of Alexis and Zoe Alexakis\u2019s descendants, after Aperi, trace their lineage to Othos. Zoe\u2019s mother was named Ernia; she was a native of Aperi and one of Karpathos\u2019s prominent *kanakares* (major woman landowner). Ernia\u2019s estate passed to Zoe in accordance with the custom of primogeniture. Tax records from Aperi list several taxpayers with the surname Piliatis; among them, in 1876, was Nicholas J. Piliatis, who appears to have been Zoe\u2019s brother. The 1894 tax records also list John N. Piliatis, who paid 105 \u201cgrosia\u201d and is classified among the *kanakaris* (major man landowner). The younger John N. Piliatis was likely the grandson of Zoe\u2019s father, whose substantial estate he inherited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexakis arrived in Karpathos at a time when the Aperitans abandoned the fortified \u201cKoraki\u201d and relocated to the foothills of the Castle, known as Lower Aperi. The neighborhoods of Moroou and Valantou had begun to take shape but were not yet fully developed. Having been born and raised amidst the mountain peaks of Crete\u2014with views overlooking both the Cretan and Libyan Seas\u2014Alexakis disliked the village\u2019s location, as it offered no sight of the sea. Consequently, upon marrying, he built his home on the mountainside, in the area that would later become the Loroi neighborhood. The ruins of this house, situated a short distance below the small church of Misosporitissa, are remembered by the village elders as the \u201cremains ruins\u201d of Alexaki Zoe\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexakis devoted himself with great diligence to agriculture and to developing both his wife\u2019s estates and the properties he had purchased. According to family tradition, Alexakis introduced olive trees to Karpathos. This claim is incorrect, however, as olive cultivation had been known on the island since antiquity. It appears, though, that olive cultivation had fallen into neglect, a fact confirmed by Ross, who visited Karpathos in 1843 and found agriculture in a state of neglect.<\/p>\n\n\n

Alexakis planted many young olive trees brought from Crete and grafted numerous wild olive trees in the plain of ancient Poseidion in Pigadia. Initially, Alexakis faced significant difficulties because the goats belonging to Lentos, a local shepherd, kept destroying the young olive trees. Lentos paid no heed to the complaints and protests of Alexakis, who sought to transform the ravines of Karpathos into Cretan olive groves. Exasperated, Alexakis brought a \u201cGra\u201d (rifle) from Crete and used it to kill Lentos\u2019s goats whenever they approached the olive trees. Ultimately, Alexakis\u2019s olive trees won the battle; the plain of Poseidion became home to the largest olive grove on Karpathos, and from there, olive cultivation spread to other villages as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexakis had four sons, Nick, John, Anastasis and Zorzis, and two daughters, Ernia and Stamatoula. Around 1880, Alexakis\u2019s children began using the surname Alexiadis, though they were better known by names such as \u201cNikolis of Alexakis,\u201d \u201cGiannis of Alexakis,\u201d and so on. In certain documents, they also use the surname Alexiou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick the eldest son married Zoe, the eldest daughter of Manolis Matsakis and herself one of Karpathos\u2019s major woman landowner. Manolis Matsakis, who hailed from Mani, had taken part in the Revolution of 1821 alongside his father, George Matsakis; in 1843, King Otto awarded him a certificate in recognition of his services toward the liberation of Greece. Nck built the first olive oil mill on Karpathos, featuring an iron press and stone millstones. Previously, olives had been crushed and pressed using a wooden press.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ernia\u2019s eldest daughter married Hatzimanolis Kapetanakis, a prominent Karpathian. Ernia and her first child died in childbirth, and Kapetanakis later married Hatzikali, who was also one of the great landowner of Karpathos. In accordance with the Karpathian inheritance customs of the era, Ernia\u2019s estate did not pass to Kapetanakis; instead, it reverted to her mother and subsequently to Stamatoula, Alexakis\u2019s second daughter. Furthermore, Stamatoula\u2019s eldest daughter, Zoe, who in turn inherited the estate, did not name her own eldest daughter Stamatoula, but Ernia, so that the transfer of the property could continue in the sequence of Ernia to Zoe to Ernia, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexakis\u2019s other children married into prominent families from Apeiri, despite being an outsider, Alexakis was held in high regard by the conservative society of Karpathos. His second son John married Kalitsa Antimisiaris, known as \u201cKalitsa of Koukias\u201d (Kalitsa of the Beans) because her father was a merchant who imported legumes from Asia Minor. Anastasis married Kalitsa Gergatsouli, and Zorzis, the youngest son, married Sofia Panteli. Zorzis lived to see so many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews, that he became known in Apeiri as \u201cKallas o Zorzis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earliest surviving document concerning Alexakis is his will, written on November 26, 1879, which reveals that he had amassed a substantial land estate. Although he had already provided dowries for his two eldest sons by the time the will was drafted, sixteen land properties are listed therein. In the 1876 tax records, Alexakis paid 75 \u201cgrosia\u201d in taxes on the real estate he had retained for his younger sons. His eldest son, Nick, paid 261 \u201cgrosia\u201d, and his second son, John, paid 201 \u201cgrosia\u201d, based on the property they had inherited as well as that of their wives. Later, in 1894, once his younger sons Anastasios and Zorzis had come of age and married, they paid 58 and 60 \u201cgrosia\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexakis died around 1890, although an unconfirmed report suggests he survived until 1897. Until his death, he never abandoned his Cretan attire, wearing the traditional \u201cvraka\u201d (breeches).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A study by Manolis Cassotis and Andreas Alexiadis, published in 1978 in the Karpathian Federation\u2019s commemorative volume, lists, in addition to his six children, 24 grandchildren, 89 great-grandchildren, 185 great-great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-great-grandchildren. Research into Alexakis\u2019s descendants was further expanded by Nick Antimisiaris and John Stamatiadis. Today, the number of Alexakis\u2019s descendants exceeds 2,000. Because the pioneering Karpathians who emigrated to America included Alexakis\u2019s sons Anastasis and Zorzis, as well as 15 of his grandsons and 2 of his granddaughters; consequently, the majority of Alexakis\u2019s descendants reside in America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
