Searching for Their Roots \u2013 2<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manolis Georgiou Matsakis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in the previous article, I am tracing the roots of my next ancestor using family traditions, documents, and DNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George Matzakis, from Outer Mani, and his son Manolis took part in the Revolution of  Independence in 1821 and were honored by the Greek government with the awarding of a certificate of honor and a corresponding medal in 1847. While the full extent of the Matzakis family history is unknown, the suffix \u201cakis\u201d in the surname indicates a Cretan origin. During that period, many Cretans relocated to Mani, just as Maniotes moved to Crete, to escape the pressures imposed by successive conquerors or even to avoid the blood feuds prevalent in both regions. Following the Revolution of 1821, he is found living in Syros in 1834.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certain information regarding Manolis Matsakis and his connection to Karpathos has been preserved through family tradition, as handed down by his great-grandson, the dentist Nick Dimitris Matsakis (born 1914); his grandson Elias Michael Matsakis (born 1913); his grandson Mikis (Michael) John Matsakis, who held the diploma awarded to Manolis Matsakis; and his great-granddaughter Zoe Stamataki-Cassotis (born 1914), who lived from 1926 to 1932 with her grandmother Zoe Matsakis-Alexiadis, Manolis Matsakis\u2019s daughter, from whom she gathered considerable oral information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to family tradition, Manolis Matzakis came from Syros to Karpathos, where he married Erine Hatzimanoli, member of one of the prominent families of Aperi. The exact date of his arrival in Karpathos is unknown, but he appears to have married around 1848. As indicated by an attached certificate, in 1861 their children were of the following ages: George (12), Nicholas (9), John (6), Zoe (4), Anna \u2018Kyrania\u2019 (2), and Maria \u2018Marigo\u2019 (5 months). They were followed by Elias, and finally Michael, who was born in 1874. Consequently, their first child was born in 1849.<\/p>\n\n\n

It was his great-grandson, the dentist Nikos D. Matsakis, who began the research on Manolis Matsakis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Due to local pronunciation, the surname Matzakis evolved into Matsakis. It appears in this form in Aperi\u2019s tax registers, in 1876. Manolis Matsakis paid 150 \u201cgrosia\u201d, ranking among the highest taxpayers, likely due in part to his wife\u2019s land property. Later, when his eldest daughter, Zoe, married and received her mother\u2019s estate as a dowry, the tax paid by Manolis Matsakis decreased significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He worked as wood crafter and furniture maker and crafted the iconostasis of the metropolitan church in Aperi. He also crafter the iconostasis of the Saint Spyridon church in Fry, Kasos. As Manolis\u2019s daughter, Zoe, recounted to her granddaughter Zoe Cassotis, the entire family moved to Kasos for a considerable period while her father was constructing the iconostasis for Saint Spyridon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to family tradition, when Manolis Matsakis arrived in Karpathos, then under Ottoman rule, he was sentenced to death for his participation in the Revolution of 1821 and was arrested to be sent to Rhodes. However, before his transfer, he asked the Turk who had come to arrest him if he could offer him a gift to remember him. The Turk agreed, and Matsakis presented him with a carved walnut chest. Upon seeing the exquisite carvings, the Turk remarked: \u201cIt would be a sin for a craftsman like you to die. You have skilled hands but a reckless mind. I will spare your life if you promise never again to get involved in politics or revolutions.\u201d Matsakis agreed, and when he was taken to Rhodes, the Turk intervened on his behalf, securing his release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1861, we find him once again in Syros with his wife and their six children (George, Nicholas, John, Zoe, Anna [Kyrania], and Maria [Marigo]). However, tax records indicate that he returned to Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n

It all began in the coal mines of America with his grandson, Dimitrios N. Matsakis, and subsequently, his descendants achieved great success.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

His grandson Mikis (Michael) Matsakis, a painter who lived in Athens, was the son of his son John; the diploma awarded to Manolis Matsakis was in his possession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of Manolis Matzakis\u2019s descendants went to Asia Minor, Egypt, Cyprus, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Europe, while the majority went to America. Former Cypriot Member of Parliament and Member of the European Parliament Marios Matsakis traces his ancestry to those who went to Cyprus. Among those who went to Asia Minor was his son Elias, who married in Myra, across from Kastelorizo, where their daughter Erine was born in 1899. Following the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922, Manolis Matsakis\u2019 descendants living in Asia Minor relocated to Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Manolis Matsakis descendants\u2019 number two to three thousand and are scattered across Greece and other countries, including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Cyprus, though the majority live in America. Across these regions, many, particularly those in Athens, Rhodes, Cyprus, and America, bear the surname Matsakis. Dentist Nick Dimitris Matsakis played a significant role in gathering information about Manolis Matsakis and his descendants, an effort now being continued by his son, Dimitris.<\/p>\n\n\n

As evidenced by the tax records, Manolis Matzakis died in 1898; his name appears in the tax rolls for the last time in 1897. He was buried in Aperi\u2019s cemetery, and a metal cup was placed on his grave to hold flowers. Following the exhumation, the cup passed to his great-grandson, Nick D. Matsakis, and is now in possession of his great-great-grandson, Elias N. Matsakis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
