Searching for their roots-4 Mousoure – Cassotis

As in the three previous articles, I am seeking the roots of my next ancestor by drawing on family traditions, documents, and DNA.

We must go back twelve centuries to find the roots of the Mousoures family. In 828, the Arabs conquered Crete, which had been part of the Byzantine Empire. The situation prevailing in Crete during the 135 years of Arab rule is described in the folk song (in free translation):

“O Sun, who rises in the morning and sets at night,

rise over the whole world and set again.

But do not rise, O Sun, over the courtyards of Barbarizos;

and if you do rise, my Sun, then set in haste.”

The Byzantines made several attempts to reconquer Crete, which was finally achieved in 961 by the general, and future emperor, Nicephorus Phokas. Concerned about the Islamization of a large portion of Crete’s population, Nicephorus Phokas settled veteran soldiers on the island; later, as emperor, he sent new inhabitants from various parts of the Empire to boost the morale of the Christian population.

The Twelve Princes

However, the problem appeared to persist; concerned about the ongoing situation, Emperor Alexios 1st Komninos sent a group of twelve prominent Byzantine nobles to Crete in 1082, authorized by a special chrysobull (the most formal public document and imperial decree of the Byzantine Empire), and granted significant property and administrative privileges, to improve conditions. They were the progenitors of Crete’s great noble families, and their arrival has come to be known through the centuries as the story of the “Twelve Princes” (Noble Sons): John Phokas, Marinos Skordylis, Philipp Gabalas, Thomas Archoleos, Eustathios Chortatzis, Leon Mousouros, Konstantine Varouchas, Andreas Melissinos, Loukas Lithinos, Nicephorus Argyropoulos, Demitrius Vlastos, and Matthaios Kalafatis.

Large areas of land on Crete were granted to all of them. To this day, their family names survive as place names. The villages of the Mousouros family are in the semi-mountainous region south of the city of Chania. A Byzantine manuscript, specifically a chrysobull, detailing the lands granted to each family, states regarding the Mousouros clan: “…And let the Mousouros nobles and soldiers also hold their shares, extending from the boundaries of the aforementioned Skordilis family, starting at ‘Christou to Geraki’, and following the natural flow of the waters…” All these Byzantine families retained their aristocratic status; during the Venetian era, they were known as “Archontoromaioi” (noble Greeks). Their coats of arms can still be found today on churches and other monuments across Crete.

Mousouros

The territory granted to the Mousouros family lies north of the line connecting Askifou, Anopolis, and Koustogerako, extending as far as the Cretan Sea, with Lakkoi Kydonias at its center. This area is home to the renowned “Strata ton Mousouron” (Mousouros’ Path); paved with cobblestones, it begins at Omalos, passes through Karanou, and terminates at Prases. Over time, due to intermarriage, the Monsours family spread to other regions, yet contact and communication between them never ceased, as evidenced by the folk song (in free translation):

During the era of Venetian rule, the Mousouros family adapted to the prevailing circumstances; on one hand, they rebelled against the conquerors, while on the other, they cooperated with them until the storm had passed, only to resume their rebellions later. During this period, several members of the Mousouros family also distinguished themselves in the realm of letters. Markos Mousouros was a student of Erasmus. In 1494, he was in Venice serving as a professor of Greek literature; in 1506, he was in Padua, and later in Rome. Works published under the collaboration and supervision of Markos Mousour included seventeen tragedies by Euripides, nine comedies by Aristophanes, and writings by other Greek classical and early Christian authors.

In 1669, following the Ottoman conquest of Crete, Venice and the Italian peninsula in general became inaccessible to the Mousouros family of Crete; however, the Eastern Mediterranean, then under Ottoman rule, opened its doors to them. The privileged islands of the southeastern Aegean, to which the Sultan had granted significant rights, were particularly attractive to the Mousouros family.

From Alexandria Mousouros went to Smyrna.

To escape the oppressive measures of the new conquerors, some of them relocated to Kasos, an island that, at the time, was beginning to develop its shipping industry and expand its operations across the Eastern Mediterranean. They quickly adapted to the island’s maritime environment, having no other choice. Kasos provided them with the opportunity to travel to Alexandria and become acquainted with other ports and commercial hubs in the Middle East. They turned their attention to this region, and some moved to Alexandria to engage in trade. Gradually, over time, they expanded their commercial activities to other Eastern Mediterranean ports as well, particularly Smyrna.

Later, when circumstances and international conditions permitted, they expanded their activities to Marseille and the rest of the Western Mediterranean, where the surname was Anglicized to Musurs and Gallicized to Musure. On Kasos, where the fact that the ‘e’ is silent in French was unknown, it was transformed into Mousoure, with an accent on ‘e’.

Since then, the surname Mousoure has become established in Kasos, in other parts of Greece, and in the countries to which they migrated. Today, the chapel of Saint George of Mousoure stands on a hill near the Kasos airport. This same church is also known as Saint George of the Spring, because there is a rainwater collection cistern right next to it. According to linguistics professor Kostis Minas, the surname Mousoure existed in Olympos 150–200 years ago, likely originating from marriages between Kasians and Karpathians. The surname Mousoure was also found among Kasians emigrated to America.

A certain George Mousoure, who was active in Alexandria, married a local Greek woman, and they named their firstborn son Savvas. Since then, the tradition has continued of naming the firstborn sons of their descendants George-Savvas- George. There is a family heirloom, an icon of Saint Savvas of Middle Eastern origin, dating back approximately 300 years, that continues to be passed down from Savvas to George to Savvas.

From Mousoure to Cassotis

One of the Mousoure family, named Savvas George Mousoure, had relocated his commercial operations to Smyrna and decided, during the final decades of the 19th century, to expand them to Symi. At that time, Symi was the major commercial and maritime hub between Smyrna and Antalya, boasting a population of around 25,000, comparable to the 45,000 inhabitants of the entire island of Rhodes. He sent his son George to Symi; because his Kasian origins remained as part of his identity, he became known as “George the Kasian,” and the surname Mousoure fell into oblivion and was replaced with Cassotis.

In Symi, he married Fani (daughter of Giannis Kypraios), from a prominent merchant family on the island. The couple had three sons, Savvas, John, and Dimitris, and three daughters, Maria, Chryso, and Anna. Savvas married Maria John Maggafa; John married Marika Vagiou; Dimitris married Kanella Kontovraki; Chryso married Dimitris Kozas; Maria married George Kakkaris; and Anna married John Haritos, and, following his death, George Paralis. Under Savvas’s leadership, family commercial operations continued in Symi and along the coast of Asia Minor, expanding to the surrounding islands and the Middle East.

Mangafa and Kontitsi

Maria Mangafa, whom Savvas married, hailed from two old Symi families, Mangafas’ and the Kontitsis’, several members of which are mentioned in the “Mana tis Symis” (Mother of Symi) record of 1712. Mangafas’ family was involved in trade and shipping, whereas the Kontitsis’ family produced distinguished men of letters and enlightened clergy who maintained close ties with Constantinople and Mount Athos. The sacred heirloom of Kontitsis family is a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary (Panagia Spiliani), brought from Mount Athos 350 years ago by an archimandrite of the family. The icon was passed down from mother to eldest daughter, from Maria to Zoopigi.

Savvas Cassotis imported goods from Smyrna and sold them in Symi, where he operated a wholesale and retail shop at Gialos and a retail outlet at Horio (Vilage). He formed a partnership with his cousin Argyris Kastanias; Kastanias provided his “bratsera” (sailing vessel) while Cassotis supplied the merchandise, which Kastanias then sold across the surrounding islands, the coast of Asia Minor, Lebanon, and Palestine. He also purchased goods, primarily foodstuffs such as watermelons, chickpeas, lentils, fava beans, maize, molasses, cheese, and octopus, as well as large quantities of earthenware pots, firewood, and lime, and resold them from one location to another.

Following the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese and the Asia Minor Catastrophe, Symi ceased to be the region’s commercial hub, a role that shifted to Rhodes. He stopped sourcing goods from Smyrna; instead, they now arrived via Rhodes from Italy, Germany, and other countries around the world. Consequently, he turned his attention to the surrounding islands, particularly Karpathos, where he established a commercial outlet, and entrusted the business to his brother John and his son George, to whom the enterprise eventually passed.

One of the challenges he faced upon opening his business in Karpathos was the transport of goods from Pigadia to the villages, which was carried out using pack animals. Consequently, when the construction of the road from Pigadia to Aperi began, and following the 1929 completion of Aperi’s bridge and the road continued to Volada and the other villages, Savvas Cassotis brought the first truck to Karpathos.

The vehicle was packed in several sections placed inside crates. A mechanic arrived along with the crates to assemble the parts and reassemble the vehicle; he also served as its driver. Because the truck made a noise that was unusual for the time, it became known as the ‘Thunderbolt’. Later, the vehicle’s ownership was transferred to George and Emanuel Makris.

Over time, the descendants of George Mousoure-Cassotis relocated from Symi to Rhodes, Attica, Karpathos, Kasos, America, and Australia; very few remained on Symi. Today, the children and grandchildren of Panormitis, son of George Paralis and Anna Mousoure-Cassotis, reside on Kasos.
