I also cannot forget the first celebratory event on October 5, 1945, when our teacher, Fotini Pitta, took us on foot to Menetes, where we listened to our school principal, Vasos Oikonomidis. Even today, his speech still echoes in my ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the Greek government\u2019s recognition of October 5<sup>th<\/sup> as a local national holiday on March 11, 1969, government officials, including Presidents of the Republic, have participated in the commemorative events held on Karpathos. In 1970, the Karpathian Federation, under the presidency of Nicholas Ladis and with doctor Elias Horatatzis as the keynote speaker, celebrated the 26<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of October 5, 1944, in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, attended the celebratory event held in Menetes on October 5<sup>th<\/sup>; his speech was insightful and engaging. Metropolitan Ambrosios officiated at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy and Doxology at the church of Menetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, on October 4, a one-day academic symposium was held in Menetes for the third consecutive year, featuring presentations on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anamniseis.net\/nopes-oi-mnimes-apo-tin-epanastasi-tis-5is-oktovriou-1944\/#\">&nbsp;historical<\/a> events of that era. The event was organized by Minas Alexiadis, Professor Emeritus at the University of Athens; in addition to him, former Mayor of Karpathos Michael Ioannidis and historical researcher George Tsampanakis also delivered presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The academic session is expected to continue during the upcoming commemorative events marking this historic anniversary, with the participation of university professors; we also hope it will expand to include the perspectives of other nationalities regarding the events of October 5, 1944, specifically, to shed light on how the Italians, Germans, and British viewed the Revolution of October 5 from their own respective standpoints. Fortunately, there is ample documentation available on this subject that can be examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0392\u03b9\u03b2\u03bb\u03af\u03b1\u0399\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c1\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the war ended, the British took as prisoners the Italians who had served on Karpathos during the German occupation and transported them to Egypt; upon their return to Italy, they had to answer for their conduct, as they were considered supporters of the Italian Social Republic (Mussolini\u2019s fascist government in Northern Italy). Italian archives contain, among other documents, the statements of the following officers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Captain Armanto Amenduni was a mortar officer. Following the departure of Colonel Francesco Impiani on February 8, 1944, he formally assumed the role of civil governor of Karpathos and resided in Aperi, in the Valantou district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First Lieutenant Ennio Grimaldi. He served as an accountant with the \u201cCompagnia Comando\u201d (Headquarters Company) in Pigadia; following the arrival of the Germans, he was formally appointed by Colonel Francesco Impiani as secretary for the Italian schools, even though they were not in operation. He lived in Aperi, in the Loroi district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First Lieutenant Antonio De Carlo. He oversaw Italian food supplies and was married to Frango Safi, the adopted daughter of George Matsakis. He lived in Pigadia, where the remaining food depots were located following the departure of almost all the Italians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maresciallo Enrico Penna. After the arrival of the Germans, as during the Italian occupation, he oversaw the police station at Pigadia. There is also a letter that Penna sent to Maresciallo Alexandro Cavalaro after the war, describing the events that followed the German withdrawal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the Italian archive of the \u201cUfficio Procedimenti Contro Criminali di Guerra Tedeschi\u201d (Office for Proceedings against German War Criminals) contains a report by Colonel Impianti describing the situation of the Italians up to February 8, 1944, when he departed from Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u03a3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c9\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u0398\u03ad\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the German side, among other things, there is also archival information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By First Lieutenant Hans Vogeler, regarding the events of the German withdrawal on October 4, 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 12 German soldiers who deserted, having failed to withdraw from Karpathos on October 4, 1944, went to Menetes with the insurgents. However, upon their return to Germany, they had to answer for their actions as deserters. Vogeler\u2019s archive contains the statement of one of them, describing the situation that prevailed in Menetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hans Vogeler\u2019s grandson is currently preparing a study based on his grandfather\u2019s archival material, focusing on his participation in the Second World War. The study includes information relating to Karpathos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the British side, there are documents referring to the Karpathian revolutionaries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Report by the Assault Force Commander, Commander S.H. Dennis D.S.C., R.N., who arrived at Karpathos aboard the destroyer \u201cTerpsichore\u201d on 17 October 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to British non-commissioned officer Roy Allwright, who served in the office of the British Military Commander of Karpathos, there were reports from British officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Captain Charles J. Bonnington, Civil Affairs Officer. The names of Karpathians are listed, including revolutionaries, whom he assigned to duty or hired for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspectors MacDonald, Leonard Wolf, and Haney, who undertook the organization and administration of the BMA (British Military Administration) civil police force. The names of the Karpathians recruited as police officers, including former revolutionaries, are listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Captain Wuting, who undertook the organization and direction of the courts.
