Consequently, apart from school textbooks, there were very few books in circulation in Karpathos during that period, and other types of printed material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most popular books was Victor Hugo\u2019s \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d, favored by women who, however, did not know how to read. Consequently, in the evenings when they gathered for a social visit, instead of the grandmother recounting old traditional tales and fairy stories, she would have her literate granddaughter read five to ten pages from Victor Hugo. Some, not wanting to remain idle, brought along a spindle to spin wool, while others, with a ball of yarn and a pair of knitting needles, would knit a sweater. Beyond the historical progression of the narrative, they also took interest in the characters. If someone in the village was authoritarian, they would pin the nickname \u201cJavert\u201d on him, the same nickname they had given to Antiko, the Italian commander of Karpathos. As for the scrappiest, \u201ctoughest\u201d little boys, they called them Gavroche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0392\u03c1\u03b5\u03af\u03c4\u03b5\u039d\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another book they favored was \u201cMargarita, the Fairy of the Jungle\u201d, which recounted the battles between Spanish conquistadors and indigenous Native Americans, and featured the beautiful Margarita. Young children would also listen to the reading of this novel; the next day, if a child misbehaved, his mother would tell him that Coloradas, the red-skinned Apache chief, would come to punish him. Other novels that sparked interest, especially among young men, were those depicting conflicts in the Caribbean between Spanish seafarers and British privateers. Among the works by Greek authors, the most popular, particularly among young women, was \u201cThe Beauty of Peran\u201d, by Dimitrios Papadopoulos, and \u201cGolfo\u201d by Spyridon Peresiadis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those who had completed middle school, books by Emmanouil Manolakakis, specifically \u201cDoric Decree of Karpathos\u201d (1876) and \u201cKarpathiaka\u201d (1896), were in circulation, as were works by Michael G. Michaelidis-Nouaros: \u201cLegal Customs of the Island of Karpathos\u201d (1926), \u201cFolklore Miscellany of Karpathos\u201d (1934\u20131936), and \u201cHistory of the Island of Karpathos\u201d (1940\u20131949). Furthermore, in Egypt, home to a thriving Dodecanesian expatriate community, the \u201cDodecanesian Almanac\u201d was published and reached Karpathos; it contained a wealth of historical material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0392\u03c1\u03b5\u03af\u03c4\u03b5\u0392\u03b9\u03b2\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/a383-Printing9-Small-rotated.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/a383-Printing9-Small-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4076246334310851;width:480px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0395\u03c6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03b4\u03b1 \u00ab\u038c\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2\u00bb. Newspaper \u201d Olympos\u201d.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, in 1914, the Karpathian newspaper \u201cDawn\u201d, published in Athens by Miltiadis Papamanolis, began to reach Karpathos; in 1923, it continued publication under the name \u201cDodecanesian Dawn\u201d. Furthermore, in 1934, Charalampos Kassios began publishing \u201cVoice of Karpathos\u201d. From America, bulletins issued by \u201cKEPA\u201d and \u201cOmonoia\u201d, as well as commemorative albums, began to arrive, brought by visiting or returning emigrants. These materials circulated from hand to hand, reaching dozens of readers. However, in the 1930s, the Italians, in their attempt to \u201cdehellenize\u201d the Dodecanese, banned their circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0395\u03c6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2Online<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the liberation, the British began publishing a two-page news bulletin in English, in November 1944, featuring the latest war news on the front page and news from Karpathos on the second, under the title \u201cCARPATHOS\u2013DAILY NEWS BULLETIN.\u201d Later, from April 6, 1945, to June 16, 1945, the bulletin was also published in Greek. Initially, it was printed using a mimeograph machine, and later at the \u201cPhokaena\u201d printing press. In 1946, Charalampos Kassios began publishing \u201cThe Voice of Karpathos\u201d, though distributing it on the island proved difficult due to transportation challenges. Meanwhile, the first Karpathians returning from America began bringing with them societies\u2019 newsletters and commemorative albums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After 1947, when Greece assumed military administration of the Dodecanese, transport links between Karpathos and Piraeus improved. I remember that the physician Fragkiskos Sakellaridis, son of the schoolteacher Christoforos Sakellaridis, who lived in Athens, would buy the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anamniseis.net\/ientypi-enimerosi-stin-karpatho-tou-perasmenou-eona\/#\">&nbsp;newspaper<\/a> \u201cTo Vima\u201d every day; each week, he would bundle the copies into a parcel and mail it to his father. Although it took a few days for the parcel to arrive, his father was kept informed, albeit with a delay, about events in Greece and across the globe. During that period, radios were available in only one or two coffee houses in Pigadia. Newspaper \u201cThe Voice of Olympos\u201d.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, in 1948, following the incorporation of the Dodecanese into Greece, a scheduled ferry would depart from Piraeus every two weeks, calling at each of the Dodecanese islands in turn; it would take two days for the vessel to reach Karpathos. Eventually, the ferry began arriving on a weekly basis. During its stop in Rhodes, it would bring to Karpathos Athenian newspapers and magazines, distributed by Vassos Andreou. On the day the ferry arrived, known as \u201cVaporina\u201d (Ferry holyday), many would travel from their villages to Pigadia to purchase newspapers and magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0392\u03c1\u03b5\u03af\u03c4\u03b5\u039d\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03ac<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most popular magazines among women were \u201cTreasure\u201d and \u201cRomance\u201d; meanwhile, the number of women who knew to read had increased. In addition to articles on historical and folkloric topics, they also published three or four serialized novels. Many women would set aside their chores to read the next installment of their favorite novel. They were eager to find out what happened with the romance between the French doctor, Porentier, and his girlfriend. It would take a week for a magazine to make its way around the neighborhood, just in time for the arrival of the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The magazines that kids preferred were \u201cPAMEN\u201d and \u201cMASKA\u201d. \u201cPAMEN\u201d featured fantastic stories and adventures set in the jungles of Congo. You could see Tarzan leaping from tree to tree, battling gorillas, and even lions, crocodiles, and pythons. \u201cMASKA\u201d contained crime stories, depicting criminals committing thefts and murders, with the police in hot pursuit, as well as articles about the Wild West, focusing on the lawlessness that prevailed in the western territories of the United States before they were organized into states. Students were permitted to read \u201cPAMEN\u201d, but \u201cMASKA\u201d was forbidden. Consequently, when a teacher discovered an issue of \u201cMASKA\u201d in a student\u2019s bag, he confiscated it. Newspaper \u201cKarpathian Echo\u201d.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The magazine with the fewest readers, yet the one I preferred, was the \u201cSun\u201d; it contained articles on history, folklore, archaeology, and nature, and was reminiscent of \u201cNational Geographic\u201d. It described the lives of the Incas in the Andes, the Mayas in Mexico, the Eskimos in Alaska, and indigenous peoples in Tibet, as well as the natural environments of the Amazon, other pristine regions of the world, and America\u2019s national parks. There were also articles concerning ancient civilizations and archaeological excavations. Accompanying the magazine, in a separate volume, was the \u201cSun\u2019s\u201d encyclopedia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In those days, pocket money was scarce, or even non-existent, so I had to find a way to buy the \u201cSun\u201d. I would save copies of the newspaper \u201cTo Vima\u201d, given to me by Christoforos Sakellariris, as well as issues of the magazine \u201cTreasure\u201d that my mother used to buy. Once I had collected enough, I would sell them to a grocer, who used the pages to wrap sardines. That is where the \u201cSun\u201d would also end up after I had finished reading it, though, naturally, this did not apply to the encyclopedia. Since the encyclopedia I acquired was one of the few available on Karpathos, many people, mostly adults, would borrow it to look up topics that interest them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0395\u03c6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2Online<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1952, \u201cKarpathiaki\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anamniseis.net\/ientypi-enimerosi-stin-karpatho-tou-perasmenou-eona\/#\">&nbsp;newspaper<\/a> began publication, founded by doctor George Georgiou. A few years later, \u201cKarpathiaki Echo\u201d, published by the Pan-Karpathians Association appeared, followed by \u201cVoice of Olympos\u201d, issued by the Olympians Association; all based in Piraeus. Additionally, in Rhodes, the newspaper \u201cOlympos\u201d began publication under the local Olympians Association. Also, for a period in America, the newspaper \u201cKarpathos\u201d was published by Kostis N. Zavolas. These newspapers covered news from Karpathos and the Karpathian communities in Greece and abroad, while featuring articles on Karpathian history and folklore, as numerous traditional Karpathian couplets. Concurrently, several historical and folkloric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anamniseis.net\/ientypi-enimerosi-stin-karpatho-tou-perasmenou-eona\/#\">&nbsp;books<\/a>, authored by new Karpathian writers, began to be published.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/anamniseis.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/a383-Printing6-Small.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4.718232044198895;width:854px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u0395\u03c6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03b4\u03b1 \u00ab\u039a\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u03b1\u03b8\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03ae\u00bb. Newspaper \u201cVoice of Karpathos\u201d.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In America, after several years, KEPA\u2019s\u2019 and Omonoia\u2019s bulletins ceased publication; however, many associations continued to publish commemorative albums. In 1978, the publication of the magazine \u2018KARPATHOS\u2019 began, by the Karpathian Federation and continue for several years, in addition to news from the American community, it featured articles on history and folklore. \u2018KARPATHOS\u2019 was mailed to 2,000 Karpathians living in America, Greece, and other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, more than a century of printed news concerning Karpathos has come to an end. As is the case all over the world, print media has gradually begun to decline, initially due to radio and television, and more recently, because new technology has transformed the landscape. Printed newspapers and magazines have been replaced by digital counterparts, and even Facebook. The number of \u201cjournalists\u201d has grown, yet, with few exceptions, the quality has deteriorated.
