Δωδεκανησιακά Τοπωνύμια στην Αμερική

Οι πρώτοι Ευρωπαίοι μετανάστες ερχόμενοι στην Αμερική έδιναν ονόματα στις πόλεις που δημιουργούσαν θυμίζοντας την πατρίδα τους: Boston, MA (Βρετανοί), Nederland, CO (Ολλανδοί), Bern NC (Ελβετοί), Anaheim, CA (Γερμανοί), Norway, OR (Νορβηγοί), Stockholm, IA (Σουηδοί), Los Angeles CA (Ισπανοί), New Orleans, LA (Γάλλοι), Dublin OH (Ιρλανδοί).

Οι Έλληνες που άργησαν να έλθουν δεν είχαν αυτή την ευκαιρία, αλλά τους αντικατέστησαν οι μελετητές και θαυμαστές του αρχαίου ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Στην Βόρειο, Νότιο και Κεντρική Αμερική και σε νησιά της Καραϊβικής υπάρχουν 281 πόλεις, κωμοπόλεις και χωριά με ελληνικά ονόματα. Οι περισσότερες, 263 απ’ αυτές, βρίσκονται σε 41 από τις 50 πολιτείες των ΗΠΑ και μια απ’ αυτές τις πολιτείες έχει Ελληνικό όνομα.

Οι υπόλοιπες 18 πόλεις βρίσκονται σε επτά άλλες χώρες. Στη Βραζιλία, εκτός από τέσσερις πόλεις με ελληνικά ονόματα και το εθνικό πάρκο Παρνασός, δωρεά του Καστελοριζιού Σάββα Νικολάου Σάββα, υπάρχουν άλλες 118 πόλεις που έχουν ως δεύτερο συνθετικό του ονόματος τους την λέξη «πόλη» (polis). Το ίδιο συμβαίνει και με 11 πόλεις στις ΗΠΑ και με μία στην Ουρουγουάη. Ορισμένες ονομασίες, όπως Αλέξανδρος και Αλεξάνδρεια (30 φορές), Τροία (22), Αθήνα (20), Αρκαδία (16), Σπάρτη (14) και το Εύρηκα-Εύρηκα του Αρχιμήδη (18) είναι ιδιαίτερα δημοφιλείς. Από όλες τις πολιτείες, πόλεις, κωμοπόλεις και χωριά δώδεκα έχουν δωδεκανησιακά ονόματα και τέσσερις συνδέονται με τα Δωδεκάνησα.

Rhode Island

Το 1524 ο Ιταλός εξερευνητής Giovanni da Verrazano έφθασε στο σημερινό λιμάνι της Νέας Υόρκης και συνέχισε ανατολικά, ακολουθώντας την νότια ακτή του Long Island. Όταν έφτασε στην ανατολική άκρη του, στράφηκε προς βορρά, όπου συνάντησε κάποιο άλλο νησί. Στην έκθεσή του προς το χρηματοδότη του βασιλιά Francis 1^ο της Γαλλίας ανέφερε ότι το νησί αυτό έμοιαζε με τη Ρόδο. Το 1582, σ’ ένα βιβλίο με τον τίτλο «Διάφορα ταξίδια», που έγραψε ο Άγγλος Richard Hackloyd, αναφερόμενος στην επίσκεψη και περιγραφή του Verrazano, έγραψε ότι το νησί θύμιζε στον Verrazano τη Ρόδο της Μεσογείου.

Αρκετά χρόνια αργότερα, Άγγλοι, υπό τον πάστορα Roger Williams, αποίκησαν το νησί, που το διεκδικούσαν και οι Ολλανδοί με κάποιο άλλο όνομα. Ο Williams, για να αντιμετωπίσει ο τις ολλανδικές διεκδικήσεις, ζήτησε από το Γενικό Δικαστήριο της Αγγλίας να αναγνωρίσει ως ονομασία του νησιού τη Rhodes. Το 1663 ο βασιλιάς Charles 2^ος της Αγγλίας υιοθέτησε το όνομα αυτό, όταν εξέδωσε τον καταστατικό χάρτη για την αποικία.

Αργότερα το ίδιο όνομα επεκτάθηκε και σ’ ολόκληρη την αποικία επί της αμερικανικής ηπείρου. Το 1776 με την Αμερικανική Επανάσταση της Ανεξαρτησίας, η αποικία του Rhode Island απετέλεσε μια από τις 13 αρχικές πολιτείες των ΗΠΑ. Σήμερα, ο πληθυσμός του Rhode Island ανέρχεται σε 1.100.000 κατοίκους.

Tarpon Springs, FL

Οι πρώτοι Δωδεκανήσιοι σφουγγαράδες έφτασαν στα νησιά Bahamas πριν από το 1890 και απ’ εκεί στο Tarpon Springs. Ο πρώτος γνωστός Δωδεκανήσιος που έφτασε στο Tarpon Springs, το 1896, ήταν ο καπετάν Νικολής του Γιάννουκα από τη Χάλκη. H ομαδική εγκατάσταση των Δωδεκανησίων σφουγγαράδων από την Κάλυμνο, Σύμη και Χάλκη άρχισε το 1905. Σύντομα το Tarpon Springs αναπτύχθηκε σε μια μικρή πόλη που πήρε ελληνικό χαρακτήρα και θεωρείται σαν προέκταση της Δωδεκανήσου στο Νέο Κόσμο και έμεινε γνωστή μεταξύ των Αμερικανών ως το Greek City.

Ακόμη και σήμερα το Tarpon Springs διατηρεί το δωδεκανησιακό του χαρακτήρα, αφού αρκετοί από τους δημάρχους και άλλοι αξιωματούχοι του Tarpon Springs είναι Δωδεκανησιακής καταγωγής, όπως και οι ομοσπονδιακοί βουλευτές της κεντροδυτικής Florida Μιχάλης και Κώστας Μπιλιράκης. Εκτός των απογόνων των Δωδεκανησίων σφουγγαράδων και άλλοι Δωδεκανήσιοι, από τις βόρειες πολιτείες, μετακομίζουν στο Tarpon Springs, όταν πάρουν τη σύνταξη τους. Σήμερα, ο πληθυσμός του Tarpon Springs ανέρχεται σε 26.000 κατοίκους.

Nicholson Town, WV

Ένας από τους πρωτοπόρους Δωδεκανησίους μετανάστες της Αμερικής ήταν Χατζημανώλης Νικολάου Αλεξιάδης από την Κάρπαθο που εγκαταστάθηκε στο Wheeling. Προτού έλθει στην Αμερική πήγε στο Αϊδίνι και στο Σουδάν και απέκτησε επιχειρηματική πείρα. Αν και εγκαταστάθηκε σε ανθρακοφόρα περιοχή δεν δούλεψε σε ανθρακωρυχείο, αλλά ασχολήθηκε με τις επιχειρήσεις.

Όπως συνηθιζόταν εκείνη την εποχή, κοντά σε κάθε ανθρακωρυχείο, η εταιρεία που το εκμεταλλευόταν έκτιζε σπίτια που τα ενοικίαζε στους εργάτες και μαγαζιά, απ’ όπου ψώνιζαν με πίστωση. Γινόταν όμως μεγάλη εκμετάλλευση σε βάρος των εργαζομένων, επειδή η εταιρεία είχε το μονοπώλιο. Κοντά σε μια καρβουνόμινα, που δούλευαν αρκετοί Καρπάθιοι και πολλοί άλλοι Έλληνες, έκτισε ο Χατζημανώλης ένα μαγαζί και μερικά σπίτια. Απέκτησε μεγάλη πελατεία, επειδή οι τιμές και τα ενοίκια που έπαιρνε ήταν πιο συμφέροντα για τους ανθρακωρύχους. Με τον καιρό έκτισε και άλλα σπίτια και σχηματίσθηκε έτσι ένας μικρός οικισμός όπου έμεναν μερικές εκατοντάδες ανθρακωρύχοι, και μεταξύ των Ελλήνων της περιοχής έγινε γνωστός ως το χωριό του Χατζημανώλη.

Όταν, ο Χατζημανώλης ζήτησε από την Πολιτεία να αναγνωρισθεί επίσημα το χωριό και να πάρει καταστατικό χάρτη, ζήτησε να ονομασθεί ως Nicholson town. Ο Χατζημανώλης είχε αλλάξει το επίθετο του από Αλεξιάδης σε Nicholas, που ήταν το πατρώνυμό του, γιατί ήθελε ν’ αποφύγει τις (τότε) φυλετικές διακρίσεις των Αγγλοσαξόνων σε βάρος των νέων μεταναστών. Με την παρακμή των ανθρακωρυχείων παρήκμασε το Nicholson town και εγκαταλείφθηκε. Έμεινε μόνο η ονομασία του.

Simi Valley, CA

Μερικά μίλια ανατολικά του Los Angeles, σε μια από τις πιο εκτεταμένες κοιλάδες της California, βρίσκεται η Simi Valley. Δεν είναι γνωστό πως πήρε το όνομα της και πως συνδέεται με την Σύμη της Δωδεκανήσου. Παλαιότερα ονομαζόταν Simiopolis και αργότερα, για συντομία, περικόπηκε σε Simi. Με την αλματώδη ανάπτυξη του Los Angeles η Simi Valley έγινε προάστιο του. Στην Simi Valley βρίσκεται η βιβλιοθήκη του Αμερικανού προέδρου Regan, όπου φυλάσσεται ό,τι έχει σχέση με την προεδρία του. Σήμερα, ο πληθυσμός της Simi Valley υπερβαίνει τους 125.000 κατοίκους.

Rhodes Point, MD

Στην Chesapeake Bay υπάρχει ένα μικρό νησί, με υψόμετρο ένα μέτρο πάνω από τη θάλασσα, που λέγεται Smith Island και ανήκει στην πολιτεία της Maryland. Επάνω στο νησί υπάρχει ένα παραλιακό χωριό δεκάδων κατοίκων που ονομάζεται Rhodes Point.

Cassopolis, MI

Στο νότιο τμήμα της πολιτείας Michigan υπάρχει μια μικρή πόλη που ονομάζεται Cassopolis. Το όνομα της πόλης προέρχεται από το όνομα της Cass county (νομού), της οποίας είναι πρωτεύουσα. Δεν έχει εξακριβωθεί, αν η ονομασία της Cass county έχει σχέση με τη Κάσο. Ο πληθυσμός της Cassopolis είναι γύρω στους 2.000 κάτοικοι.

Rhodes, MI

Στην πολιτεία του Michigan υπάρχει ένα χωριό που λέγεται Rhodes που ανήκει στον δήμο Bentley Township.

Patmos, AR

Στην νοτιοδυτική άκρη της πολιτείας του Arkansas στην Hempstead County, μέσα σε μια απέραντη πεδιάδα, βρίσκεται ένα μικρό χωριό 61 κατοίκων που λέγεται Patmos.Το χωριό έχει έκταση 300 στρεμμάτων και διασχίζεται από τον περιφερειακό δρόμο Root-355 και μια σιδηροδρομική γραμμή. Για θρησκευτικούς λόγους, οι κάτοικοι του χωριού, θέλησαν να συνδέσουν το όνομα του με το νησί της Αποκάλυψης.

Greece, NY

Cities and towns in America with Dodecanese names

The first European immigrants coming to America gave names to the cities they created reminiscent of their homeland: Boston, MA (British), Nederland, CO (Dutch), Bern NC (Swiss), Anaheim, CA (Germans), Norway, OR (Norwegians), Stockholm, IA (Swedes), Los Angeles CA (Spanish), New Orleans, LA (French), Dublin OH (Irish).

The Greeks who arrived late did not have this opportunity but were replaced by scholars and admirers of ancient Greek civilization. In North, South and Central America and on the islands of the Caribbean, there are 281 cities, towns and villages with Greek names. Most of them, 263, are in 41 of the 50 states of the USA and one of these states has a Greek name. The remaining 18 cities are in seven other countries. In Brazil, in addition to four cities with Greek names and the Parnassus National Park, donated by Kastelorizian Savvas Nicholas Savvas, there are another 118 cities that have the word “polis” (city) as the second component of their name. The same happens with 11 cities in the USA and one in Uruguay. Some names, such as Alexander and Alexandria (30 times), Troy (22), Athens (20), Arcadia (16), Sparta (14) and Archimedes’ Eureka-Eureka (18) are particularly popular. Of all the cities, and villages, twelve have Dodecanese names and four are associated with the Dodecanese.

Rhode Island

In 1524, the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano reached what is now New York Harbor and continued east, following the southern shore of Long Island. When he reached its eastern tip, he turned north, where he encountered another island. In his report to the financier King Francis I of France, he mentioned that this island resembled Rhodes. In 1582, in a book entitled “Miscellaneous Voyages” written by the Englishman Richard Hackloyd, referring to Verrazano’s visit and description, he wrote that the island reminded Verrazano Rhodes in the Mediterranean.

Several years later, the English under the pastor Roger Williams colonized the island, which was also claimed by the Dutch under a different name. Williams, to counter the Dutch claims, asked the General Court of England to recognize the island’s name as Rhodes. In 1663, King Charles II of England adopted this name when he issued the charter for the colony.

Later the same name was extended to the entire colony on the American continent. In 1776, with the American Revolution of Independence, the colony of Rhode Island became one of the 13 original states of the United States. Today, the population of Rhode Island is 1,100,000.

Tarpon Springs, FL

The first Dodecanese sponger divers arrived in the Bahamas before 1890 and from there to Tarpon Springs. The first known Dodecanese to arrive in Tarpon Springs was Captain Nikolis Giannoukas from Halki in 1896. The collective settlement of Dodecanese sponger divers from Kalymnos, Symi and Halki began in 1905. Soon Tarpon Springs developed into a small town that took on a Greek character and is considered an extension of the Dodecanese to the New World and became known among Americans as the Greek City.

In addition to the descendants of the Dodecanese sponger divers, other Dodecanese people from the northern states also move to Tarpon Springs when they retire. Today, the population of Tarpon Springs is 26,000.

Nicholson town, WV

One of the pioneer Dodecanese immigrants to America was Hadjimanolis Nicholas Alexiadis from Karpathos who settled in Wheeling. Before coming to America, he went to Aydın and Sudan and gained business experience. Although he settled in a coal bearing area he did not work in a coal mine but was involved in business.

As was customary at that time, near every coal mine, the company that operated it built houses that it rented to the workers and shops, where they shopped on credit. However, there was great exploitation at the expense of the workers, because the company had a monopoly. Near a coal mine, where several Karpathians and many other Greeks worked, Hadjimanolis built a shop and some houses. He gained a large clientele, because the prices and rents he charged were more advantageous for the miners. Over time, he built other houses, and a small settlement was formed where a few hundred miners lived, and among the Greeks of the area it became known as Hadjimanolis’ village.

When Hadjimanolis asked the State to officially recognize the village and obtain a charter, he asked to be named Nicholson Town. Hadjimanolis had changed his surname from Alexiadis to Nicholas, which was his patronymic, because he wanted to avoid the (then) racial discrimination of the Anglo-Saxons against the new immigrants. With the decline of the coal mines, Nicholson Town declined and was abandoned. Only the name remained.

It was formerly called Simiopolis and later was shortened to Simi. With the rapid growth of Los Angeles, Simi Valley became a suburb of it.
