Στις 3 Ιουλίου, στην κινέζικη εφημερίδα της Νέας Υόρκης «World Journal», δημοσιεύθηκε άρθρο με τίτλο «Parthenon Restored After 220 Years of Effort» (Ο Παρθενώνας αναστηλώθηκε μετά από 220 χρόνια προσπάθειας), και στην φωτογραφία που δημοσιεύεται διακρίνονται και ορισμένοι κινέζοι. Οκτώ χρόνια, πρέπει να πάμε πίσω για να βρούμε το ιστορικό του άρθρου που γράφτηκε από την καθηγήτρια Tina Perng.
Χώροιλατρείας
Στο πολιτισμικό μωσαϊκό και περιβάλλον που υπάρχει στην Αμερική, και ιδιαίτερα στην Μητροπολιτική περιφέρεια της Νέα Υόρκης, γνώρισα τον Allen Chiu, κινεζικής καταγωγής Αμερικάνο, που στις συζητήσεις μας, εκτός από ελληνική και κινέζικη φιλοσοφία, ήθη, έθιμα και ηθικές αξίες, μιλούσαμε για τις ιδιαιτερότητες και ομορφιές του τόπου της καταγωγής μας και για τις θερινές μας διακοπές. Ο Allen, επιρεασμένος από τα λεγόμενα μου, αποφάσισε αυτός με με την γυναίκα Joelle να επισκεφθούν την Κάρπαθο και να την γνωρίσουν από κοντά.
Συνάμα έπεισε τον γιο του Conrad με την γυναίκα του Blessing και τις κόρες τους (Jocelyn, Alexandra, Stephanie) και ένα άλλο ξευγάρι, Frank και Tina Perng, να τους ακολουθήσουν. Έτσι, στις 30 Ιουνίου 2018, έφθασε στην Κάρπαθο μια παρέα από εννέα Κινέζους, που κατέλυσαν στο Alimunta hotel.
Καρπαθο-κινέζικο αντάμωμα
Το ίδιο βράδυ γεύτηκαν από κοντά τους Καρπάθικους οικογενειακούς δεσμούς που μοιάζουν με των Κινέζων. Προσκεκλημένοι του Παναγιώτη και Ευαγγελίας Σκευοφύλακα, εκεί μέσα στην αυλή του σπιτιού, βρέθηκαν σε μια οικογενειακή συγκέντρωση, δεκάδων συγγενών που ήρθαν να τους γνωρίσουν και να τους καλλωσορίσουν στο νησί μας. Μόλις έκατσαν και αλληλογνωρίστηκαν παρουσιάστηκαν ο Παναγιώτης και Νίκος Σκευοφύλακας. Παίζαν λύρα και τσαμπούνα και τραγουδούσαν:
Χίλια καλώς ορίσατε στο όμορφο νησί μας,
εύχομαι να ξανάρθετε, είναι η θέληση μας.
Μια από τις εγγονές, η Jocelyn, που στην Αμερική παίρνει μαθήματα βιολιού, έδειξε ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για την λύρα και άρχισε να πειραματίζεται.

Ανθοστόλιστη συνάντηση
Εκτός από την οικογενειακή αγάπη και ζεστασιά που ένιωσαν, το ενδιαφέρον τους τράβηξαν τα ανθισμένα καλωπιστικά δέντρα και φυτά που ήταν φυτεμένα στην αυλή και στον κήπο.
Το συνηθίζουν και οι Κινέζοι στην Αμερική, που ζουν σε περίχωρα μεγαλουπόλεων. Ιδιαίτερα τους άρεσε η κληματαριά, φορτωμένη σταφύλια. Από το εσωτερικό του σπιτιού, τράβηξε το ενδιαφέρον τους το δωμάτιο που αναπαρίστανε το εσωτερικό Καρπάθικου σπιτιού, με τον σοφά, το πανοσούφι, τα μπαούλα, τα παγκάρια, τα ράφια με τα πιάτα, τα κάδρα με φωτογραφίες προγόνων, παλιά κεντήματα με ρητά και ο αποκρέατος.
Την ώρα που “ξυπνάει” η Αυγή
Το καθημερινό τους πρόγραμμα άρχιζε την ώρα που “ξυπνούσε” η Αυγή και ο ήλιος βγαίνοντας, ζωγράφιζε χρυσούς ποταμούς στη θάλασσα και έκανε τα σύννεφα στις κορφές των βουνών να μοιάζουν με αχνορόδινα πέπλα. Στην συνέχεια, μπάνιο στην καταγάλανη θάλασσα και περίπατο στην αμμουδιά. Αργότερα βόλτα μέχρι το λιμάνι, από τον παραλιακό δρόμο με τις καφετήριες και τα εστιατόρια και επιστρέφοντας από τον πεζόδρομο με τα τουριστικά καταστήματα.
Οι μικρές καπετάνισσες
Το πρωί της άλλης μέρας βάλαμε πλώρη για το Διαφάνι. Το “Χρυσοβαλάντου” πέρασε από το Βρόντη και συνέχισε, πλέοντας από κάβο σε κάβο άφησε πίσω του την Αχάτα, το Κατώδιο, την Κυρά Παναγιά, τα Άπελλα και τον Άη Νικόλα και συνέχισε, περνώντας από τα Αγνώντια, τον Άγιο Μηνά και άλλες παρθένες παραλίες, μέχρι που έφτασε στο Διαφάνι. Ο καπετάνιος άφησε τις εγγονές να μπουν στην καμπίνα του πλοίου κι αυτές αισθάνονταν σαν να ανέλαβαν την διακυβέρνηση του πλοίου. Τα βουνά, όπως κατέβαιναν απότομα προς την θάλασσα, φάνταζαν θεόρατα.
Σκαρφαλωμένη στην πλαγιά
Το λεωφορείο που τους πήρε από το Διαφάνι, έμοιαζε με φίδι που περνούσε μέσα από στενές ρεματιές και σιγά σιγά όλο και ανέβαινε. Ξαφνικά πρόβαλε η Όλυμπος σκαρφαλωμένη στην πλαγιά ενός απότομου βουνού, σαν νά’θελε να κρυφτεί από μάτια πειρατών. Όταν το λεωφορείο έφτασε στην είσοδο του χωριού, ακολούθησαν τον πετρόχτιστο μονοπάτι που οδηγεί στο “Πλατύ”, στο κέντρο του χωριού, όπου βρίσκεται η εκκλησία της Παναγίας.
Μπαίνοντας στην εκκλησία, τους κατέλαβε δέος. Αισθάνθηκαν ότι βρίσκονταν σε χώρο ιερό και τόπο προσευχής. Θαύμασαν το επίχρυσο τέμπλο και άναψαν από ένα κερί στην εικόνα της Παναγίας. Σαν μάνα, ακούει τις προσευχές όλων των ανθρώπων.
Μια άλλη εποχή
Στην ραχοκοκαλιά ενός απέραντου κρημνού είδαν 60 ανεμόμυλους, να αγναντεύουν το δυτικό Καρπάθιο πέλαγος και διηγούνται την ιστορία μιας άλλης εποχής. Τότε που οι Ολυμπίτες, για να επιβιώσουν, δεν άφηναν σπιθαμή γης ακαλλιέργητη για να βγάλουν λίγο σιτάρι και κριθάρι. Ένας από τους μύλους έχει μετατραπεί σε εστιατόριο, σ’ αυτό γεύτηκαν παραδοσιακά Ολυμπίτικα φαγητά ψημένα στα κάρβουνα και μέσα σε λιθόκτιστο φούρνο που άναβε με κλαδιά και ξύλα.

Να προφυλαχτούν από τους πειρατές
Το απόγευμα της επόμενης μέρας επισκέφτηκαν τα κεντρικά χωριά Απέρι, Βωλάδα, Όθος και Πυλές, που, όπως και η Όλυμπος, χτίστηκαν στο εσωτερικό του νησιού για να προφυλαχτούν από τους πειρατές. Από τις Πυλές κατηφόρισαν στο Σικέλαος, στην δυτική παραλία του νησιού και ακολούθησαν τον δυτικό παραλιακό δρόμο μέχρι το Μεσοχώρι, με ενδιάμεσο σταθμό στην παραλία του Λευκού.
Άρχισε να δύει ο ήλιος
Στην επιστροφή σταμάτησαν στο Σικέλαος σ’ ένα παραθαλάσσιο εστιατόριο, δίπλα σε μια τρεχούμενη πηγή, και απόλαυσαν άλλη μια φορά τα παραδοσιακά Καρπάθικα φαγητά. Είχαν τελειώσει το δείπνο τους, όταν ο ήλιος άρχισε να δύει και να χρυσώνει τον ορίζοντα. Στην επιστροφή, με το σκοτείνιασμα, πέρασαν από τα παραλιακά χωριά Φοινίκι και Αρκάσα, ανέβηκαν στις Μενετές και επέστρεψαν στο ξενοδοχείο τους γεμάτοι καινούργιες εντυπώσεις.
Στην Ρόδο
Ταξιδιωτικοίοδηγοί και οδοιπορικά
Μετά από μερικές μέρες στην Κάρπαθο αναχώρησαν για τη Ρόδο, όπου έμειναν σε ένα ξενοδοχείο στην Ψαροπούλα. Περιόδευσαν γύρω από το Μανδράκι και μέσα στην Παλιά Πόλη, που τους εντυπωσίασε και τους γοήτευσε.
Πήγαν και στην Λίνδο και με τα πόδια και με γαϊδούρια ανέβηκαν στην Ακρόπολη. Περιόδευσαν όλα τα κτίσματα και τα αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα και από εκεί ψηλά είδαν να απλώνεται το παραδοσιακό χωριό της Λίνδου και το λιμανάκι που αποβιβάστηκε ο Απόστολος Παύλος.
Στην Αθήνα
Προτού επιστρέψουν στην Αμερική σταμάτησαν για μερικές μέρες στην Αθήνα. Επισκέφτηκαν την Ακρόπολη, την Αρχαία Αγορά, την γύρω περιοχή και τα θέατρα του Διόνυσου και Ηρώδου του Αττικού. Πήγαν στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης και στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό μουσείο, στις Στήλες του Ολυμπίου Διός και στο Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο. Έτσι, προτού επιστρέψουν στην Αμερική, πήραν μια γεύση του Αρχαίου Ελληνικού πολιτισμού, που θαυμάζουν οι Κινέζοι και τον θεωρούν ισάξιο του δικού τους.
Το ταξίδι των ονείρων μου
Μετά την επιστροφή της στην Αμερική, η Tina Perng, αυτή που έγραψε το άρθρο, σχολιάζοντας την επίσκεψη της στην Ελλάδα είπε: «Ήταν το ταξίδι των ονείρων μου».
Επίλογος
Τα τρία κοριτσάκια που συμμετείχαν στην επίσκεψη, Jocelyn, Alexandra, Stephanie, μεγάλωσαν. Η Jocelyn τελείωσε τις πανεπιστημιακές σπουδές και εργάζεται, η Alexandra τελείωσε και αυτή τις πανεπιστημιακές σπουδές και ετοιμάζεται για την επιστημονική της καριέρα, και η Stephanie τελείωσε το Λύκειο και συνεχίζει για το πανεπιστήμιο.
Όμως δεν ξέχασαν τις εντυπώσεις από την προ οκταετίας επίσκεψη τους στην Ελλάδα και ετοιμάζονται να την επαναλάβουν με μια ομάδα γνωστών και φίλων τους. Στο μεταξύ, η Jocelyn που ασχολείται με την κλασική μουσική δημιούργησε ένα video, με τις εντυπώσεις της από την προ οκταετίας επίσκεψη.

The Chinese return to Karpathos, Rhodes and Athens

On July 3, the Chinese newspaper in New York, “World Journal,” published an article titled “Parthenon Restored After 220 Years of Effort,” and some Chinese people can be seen in the photo. We must go back eight years to find the history of the article written by the writer Tina Perng.
In the cultural mosaic and environment that exists in America, and especially in the New York Metropolitan area, I met Allen Chiu, an American of Chinese origin, who in our discussions, in addition to Greek and Chinese philosophy, morals, customs and ethical values, we talked about the peculiarities and beauties of our place of origin and about our summer holidays.
Σπουδέςξένων γλωσσών
Allen, influenced by my words, decided that he and his wife Joelle would visit Karpathos and get to know it up close. At the same time, he convinced his son Conrad with his wife Blessing and their daughters (Jocelyn, Alexandra, Stephanie) and another couple, Frank and Tina Perng, to follow them. Thus, on June 30, 2018, a group of nine Chinese arrived in Karpathos, who stayed at the Alimunta hotel.
Karpathian-Chinese meeting
That same evening, Karpathian family ties were blended with Chinese. In the courtyard of Peter and Angie Felix house, they met a family gathering of more than a dozen people, who came to meet and welcome them to their island. Once they got together and met each other, Peter junior and Nick Felix came playing lyre and pipe and singing:
One thousand times welcome to our beautiful island,
we wish you to come back, it is our desire.
Allen’s granddaughter, Jocelyn, who is taking violin lessons in America, showed particular interest in the lyre and began to experiment.
Flowering meeting
In addition to the family love and warmth they felt, they were attracted by the blooming trees and plants planted in the yard and garden. It is also common for the Chinese in America, living on the outskirts of big cities. Particularly they liked the grape vine loaded with hanging grapes. Getting inside the house, they took notice of a room that depicted the interior of the “old Karpathian house”, with “sopha”, “panosouphi”, trunks, benches, shelves with dishes, canvases with photographs of their ancestors, old embroidery with wise sayings and the storage room.

As Dawn wakes up
Their daily schedule began as Dawn “awakened”, and the sun was coming out, drawing golden rivers into the sea, making the clouds on the top of the mountains look like pink veils. Then, swim in the blue sea and walk on the sandy beach. Later a walk to the harbor, from the seafront promenade to the cafes and restaurants and return from the pedestrian street with the tourist shops.
The little captains
In the morning of the next day boarded “Chrysovalantou” to Diafani. The ship passed Vronti and continued from cape to cape, leaving behind the beaches of Achata, Katodio, Kyra Panagia, Apella and Saint Nicholas and continued, passing from Agnontia, Saint Minas and other pristine beaches until it reached Diafani. The captain left the grandchildren to enter the ship’s cabin and felt as if they were taking over the ship’s command. The mountains, as they descend abruptly to the sea, seemed that they reached the heavens.
Perched on the slope
The bus that took them from Diaphani, seemed like a snake passing through narrow ravines and slowly climbing up. Suddenly Olympos appeared on the slope of a steep mountain, as if to hide from the eyes of pirates. When the bus reached the entrance to the village, they followed the stone-built path leading to “Platy”, the village’s center, where the church of the Holy Mother is located. Entering the church, they received awe and felt that they were in a sanctuary and place of prayer. They admire the gold-plated iconostasis and lighted a candle on the Holy Mother’s icon. As mother, she listens to the prayers of all the people.
From another era
In the backbone of an immense flap saw around 60 windmills, gazing at the western Karpathian Sea and telling them the story of another era. When the Olympians, to survive, did not leave an inch of land uncultivated to produce a little wheat and barley. One of the mills has been transformed into a restaurant, where they tasted traditional Karpathian dishes cooked on grills and baked in stone-built ovens fired with wood.
To be protected from pirates
In the afternoon of the following day, they visited the central villages Aperi, Volada, Othos, Pyles, which, like Olympos, were built in the interior of the island to be protected from the pirates. From Pyles descended to Sikellaos, on the west coast of the island and following the west coastal road, arrived at Mesochori with a stop at Lefkos beach.
When the sun began to set
On their return they stopped at Sikellaos in a seaside restaurant, next to a running water spring and again enjoyed the traditional Karpathian food. When they finished their dinner, the sun began to set and golden the horizon. On their return, with the darkness approaching, they passed from the coastal villages of Foiniki and Arkasa, went up to the Menetes and returned to their hotel full of new impressions.

In Rhodes
After a few days in Karpathos, they departed for Rhodes, where they stayed at a hotel in Psaropoula and toured around Mandraki and the Old Town, that charmed them. They went to Lidos and some on foot and others on donkeys went up to the Acropolis. They visited the archeological sites and finds and from there they saw the traditional village Lindos and the cove of Apostle Paul.
In Athens
Before returning to America, they stopped for a few days in Athens and visited Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and the surrounding area and the theaters of Dionysus and Herod Atticus. They visited the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum as well as the Columns of Olympian Zeus and the Panathenaic Stadium. This experience allowed them to get a taste of Ancient Greek civilization, which the Chinese admire and regard it as equivalent to their own.

The journey of my dreams
After returning to America, Tina Perng, the author of the article, commented on her visit to Greece and said: “It was the trip of my dreams.”
Epilogue
The three girls who participated in the visit, Jocelyn, Alexandra and Stephanie, have grown up. Jocelyn has finished her university studies and is working, Alexandra has also finished her university studies and is preparing for her scientific career, and Stephanie has finished high school and is continuing to university. However, they have not forgotten the impressions from their visit to Greece eight years ago and are preparing to repeat it with a group of their acquaintances and friends. In the meantime, Jocelyn, who is involved in classical music, created a video with her impressions from the visit eight years ago.
At the “Mill”, they tasted traditional Olympian food, “prepared for gods”.
